SADV FTTH feedback

Can they unlock you permanently and give you full access, or do you have to keep contacting them? It's bullschit to lock you out of managing your own network...

Yep, according to them you have to contact them. But you shouldnt really be a need to do it often

MetroFibre Networks.

Wow - that is a true PITA. The 813G has some great capabilities. I have refined the whole QoS setup and in my opinion it is probably one of the best ways to do this. I am puzzled that providers do not give access. How do you know that remote access is not enabled and that security is not locked down?

I suppose that anyone with a locked down router will then have a proper firewall behind it - or?

Thanks. Soooooo, is there anyway I can boost the wifi signal generation from the switch?

Probably best to get a wifi repeater from Netgear or something. But it's going to be a pain to set up stuff like this with them locking you out of the device...

I'd rather get an access point then, look for something with a WAN port. Make it handle all DHCP/Firewall/QoS etc. and ask them to turn off the WiFi on the locked device. If the locked device assigns 10. addresses, use 192.168 address or vice versa, will help you differentiate between networks. You might have an issue with port forwarding though, it's going to be a bit more complex, but unless you're hosting gaming servers or something along those lines, it shouldn't be an issue.

The only option is to get our own router or move once the contract is over.

I was using that and after they set me up I could no longer connect to the site.
Check the DHCP server address? Maybe they forgot to disable ours because I can log in and do whatever the hell I want.

Is that the 192 address? Which complex are you from ?
Suddenly I feel like divulging our complex name will not be in my best interest

What's the IP address of your phone or device connected to your router? If it is something like 172.16.0.23/192.1.0.67 then try access 172.16.0.1/192.1.0.1 in your browser.

lol, cool no problem.

So they're here installing for me now. And I'm getting the same bullschit about how they can't open up the router for me. Some crap about how it's set up for their network, and even if you get another router then it won't work because it needs to be configured for their network.

This really is balls. Best solution they have is to get another 4-port router and plug it in, then manage your own router. Going to go to Cool Ideas as soon as the 3 month contract is up. Not going to stand for this crap...

Thats the general plan for most. But dont be mad at SADV. Without them we would be stuck with a 2mbps wisp. There was never going to be a Telkom option and no other fiber provider in our area for years.

So yes it sucks but all things considered....

Edit: Did they manage to pull the cable through the Dstv line?

Yeah the install went fine, the installers did a great job. I'm just mainly miffed with SADV. I would actually have stayed with them were it not for this, even if it meant paying the extra R100 pm, because I hate the admin of switching providers etc.

This is one of the reasons I never went with a provider like SADV. The lock down of the router introduces so many problems. Just be aware that if you place another router behind the 813G you will most likely run into double-NAT issues.

If they do not allow you access to the Calix, I would suggest that you get them to turn off firewall, WiFi, DHCP etc. Then get them to configure your router to be in the DMZ (you can only place one IP into the DMZ) - this will essentially open up all traffic to that device, which will then handle firewall and other stuff. This all is still very messy as you will have zero-insight what is configured on your device.

I have doubt that UPNP will actually properly work - technically UPNP should broadcast from the edge device (the Calix) but in this case it would route into a DMZ device and I somehow don't think routing will work.

At the best case I would require screenshots of all configurations - I have uploaded the 844G user-guide (which is essentially the same as the 813G) - https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1gLjV72pMhRTlU3RWZ5UjVBNEk

Unfortunately we don't have a choice, so it's SADV until the 3 month contract expires. Then we can move to the only other alternative which is Cool Ideas. I've already sent the CI rep a message asking him some of these questions and will post the feedback here.

Thanks for the rest of the info. I'm anticipating that requesting their support to place the router in the DMZ is going to result in more frustration and calls back to them. It would just be so much easier if they can hand me control for an hour or so to sort this out on my own...

How is your router range? Mine sucks.

Hi guys, we are getting SADV fibre in January. Contracts have been signed. I am in contact with the SADV representative. What should I make sure we get before they install? Like what should I ask exactly they are installing so I can make sure I'm getting the best setup possible?

Well just be prepared to wait. Our complex was supposed to be running in August and they only finished this month.

It usually takes a thousand unanswered emails and a disgusted HelloPeter post to get them to actually come do the installation.
