SADV FTTH feedback

How is your router range? Mine sucks.
It's pretty bad. I just went and got a Netgear N300, hooked it up and the range is a bit better. So far everything seems to be working fine through the Netgear, but I'll wait and see if I run into any UPnP issues.

Performance wise, local seems fine. International varies depending on where you're connecting to. I'm getting about 50% of my line speed on Usenet...

If you are in a complex with SADV's network already installed e.g. De Velde, how long does it take for SADV to install the fibre line to the apartment (once Cool Ideas have approved the application)?
This long: https://hellopeter.com/sa-digital-villages

We had to beg them. I was about to give up completely and then suddenly we were "next on the list".

Once installed it's very stable though so can't fault them there.

I have had SADV on 10mb uncapped since November on their 3 months contract, after I cancelled my 20mb vdsl. The worst decision ever, the internet speeds are intermittent, sometimes buffer a lot when using iphone, reported the issue to support was told to do speed test, and screen dumps etc. Left it at that, I never bothered. I am cancelling on 1 Jan 2017. My VDSL was much netter than their fibre

That is strange. Downloaded about 100gigs over 3 days no issue.

What is your line speed? I can only download 2GB at a time if I need faster downloads,

Im poor so only got the 10mbps option. Downloaded about 10 games from steam at a constant speed and Netflix.

It only took a week for us but they have a small team and have a lot of sites. We signed up as soon as they began advertising in the complex.

I am on the same line speed, so what tips do you have to improve my line

So we sit with the same 10mbps package he has.

Local on my cellphone and laptop: 10 up and down
International from cellphone and latop (Russian server): dropped to 2
Girlfriend's MSI laptop: speed sucks overall because of substandard hardware/wifi adapter.

So basically, checking your hardware is one way to improve speed already.

Hmmm, the last support I raise was told that nothing wrong on their end.

"Thank you for logging the case with support.

We have interrogated your line, there seems to be no current issues.

If you are still experiencing intermittent speeds, please take a scrrenshot of your speedtest and mail back to us.

When performing a speed test, you should know there are many factors which can distort the results. To ensure you receive the most accurate results, you should apply these cardinal rules by following the below steps.

1. Choose a speed test Service which allows ample bandwidth to their speed test servers. For example speedtest.mybroadband.co.za/.

2. On the test itself, make sure you test with the closest server to your physical location. For example, if you live in Randburg it would be better to select a Johannesburg server than a Durban one. The server with the shortest latency & appropriate bandwidth will yield the most accurate results.

3. Make sure your computer is connected via an Ethernet cable and NOT with Wi-Fi. This is to help ensure no other devices or people on your local network are using bandwidth while you perform the test.
Devices that are wirelessly connected to a router are unable to receive data as quickly as devices that are connected via Ethernet cables, which help maintain the router's speed.

Without an Ethernet cable, a 10 Mb/s router may only deliver half that speed to your computer, forcing media players to downgrade your video quality.

This tip works best if you're streaming on a computer; most mobile devices don't support Ethernet without an adapter.

4. Triple check you have no other programmes or unnecessary processes running in the background, such as windows updates, iTunes or antivirus. These will draw bandwidth from your line while running the speed test and obscure your results.
International servers are also limited by the amount of bandwidth they are able to receive and send. It is therefore unlikely that you will achieve the same results on an International speed test as you would from local servers".

Point number 4 is fair, but 2 and 3 are lolworthy. Typical support desk irony, take everyone as an idiot while reading/following their script...

Because of this, I built a docker image (https://hub.docker.com/r/magicdude4eva/smokeping/) which does a number of tests (including DNS and Speedtest). I have found that Speedtests my ISP does not perform well at all. High latency, large packet-loss and Speedtests on a 50Mbps line average to about 20Mbps (I agree that during heavy downloads this picture will be skewed, but with SmokePing/RRD those are outliers).

It would be interesting if other people would run this - fairly simple to kick off a docker image on a spare PC.
