Cape Town – A simulated emergency scenario will be tested in the vicinity of the Koeberg nuclear power station on Wednesday.

Officials from the City, province and others would join in the exercise by the National Nuclear Regulator.

"The exercise is planned to ensure that public safety arrangements are in place in the case of a nuclear emergency and that residents are not endangered," said the City’s disaster risk management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell.

She said that residents should not be alarmed if they heard sirens during the course of the day.

The scenario would examine evacuation plans, mass care centres, transport arrangements, decontamination and the distribution of potassium iodate tablets.

Powell said there might be road closures on intersections involving the West Coast Road, Silverstream Road, Melkbosstrand Road, the R304, and Philadelphia Road.

The City apologised for any inconvenienced caused.

It asked the public to comply with any requests from emergency services.
