Be aware of what saix has just implemented.
I'll take you through the story.
I have two computers on my LAN both configured identically with XP with a switch connected to an adsl Netgear router
On Wednesday evening I noted that I couldn't send mail on my No 1 machine but I could receive.
Browsing and downloading files all 100%
The mail on my second machine was unaffected
I tried everything to get in going, eventually I phoned Worldonline my isp and advised them of the error code 0x800CCC69.
The 2nd level techi advised that it was a Microsoft problem and to phone them.
Microsoft advised that they no longer supported OEM versions of XP and I should contact my supplier of the PC.
I had my P4 machine configured and built to my spec by StarLAN here in Cape Town.
After some time on the phone with StarLan they were equally puzzled and suggested that I bring the machine into their offices.
On plugging into their network, also adsl based, it worked fine after changing ip addresses.
Strange !!!!!!
Back to my LAN and..you guess it, it didn't work, then on a hunch I tried testing Outlook on my backup dialup link.
You guessed right again..it worked.
So now we have the near impossible situation......
Now those of you who are still with me, it gets real interesting. (If you are a techi nerd)
On the Tuesday I had looked at some archived ZIP files from 1997 that had been copied across from an old machine in the ZIP format.
On Wednesday am AVG had run and picked up the WM/ConceptA virus on 4 of the files and healed them.
But before then it had obviuosly got hold of my machine and sent out a whole bunch of mail.
Saix saw this and then black listed my machine name.
When my machine name was put on a different LAN of StarLan, with a different routing, the black listing didn't apply and obviuosly when I was dialing up saix wasn't involved.
I have changed my computer name and I am again operational.
Thanks to Hans and Eddy from Starlan for resolving this obtuse problem.......(I can't speak too highly of the support that they gave me. If you want a PC in the Cape Town area and want the best support give Hans a call at 975 5040)
The point of this story is that Saix didn't advise Worldonline or myself of the blacklisting and we were all left to resolve a very difficult problem on our own. Apparently according to Worldonline, Saix have just instituted this blacklisting policy.
