Hi All,

I am not new to news servers, actually I have been using them for while now.
To use up the free:D local bandwidth.
My question relates to the fact that every morning at exactly 08:00 the connection to the SAIX news server drops and I cannot download or get any/much throughput at all until 18:00 that evening. Could someone explain this to me and is there a way around it?

What am I missing, is local bandwidth directly proportional to the four main ZAR banks during working hours.

Not exactly sure what happens but saix seems to throttle the news server's connections to free up the bandwidth for use by companies. Thats why it only happens during office hours. I dont think there is away around it. They even throttle the connection on int. cap.

Yip SAIX throttle news server access from 08h00 to 18h00 Monday to Friday. As Arcsine says it's to give the full international pipe to internet users who have paid to have international access. If they allowed the news server full speed all day then this would just lead to deteriorated access for the users which pay the most (since price(international) > price(local) usually unless you're one of those guys grabbing 800+ gigs on an IS uncapped express account ;)).

There is also no way around this throttling, you'll just have to schedule your downloads to fit in with the way SAIX does things ;)

EDIT: But seriously you've been using them for a while but only notice now that they shape access during the day

The throttling only applies to uncached articles. If something is cached it will still come through at full speed.

you will notice though sometimes when things are cached, you will still download full speed.
If its not then you will get spikes

I get this most weekends ... its full speed then it drops and then i get less than 100KB/s . Could someone explain why it does this

Cant seem to access the SAIX news server right now... anyone else?

Its likely to be very busy now, there are lots of other people also wanting to use up their local cap.
Thanks to the WA trial Im just killing international cap on my TI account :)

I have been using the SAIX news server for a while as well, and they do throttle during the day.

As of yesterday I cannot access the newshost dot za dot net website? Has it moved? Whats going on I need my fix :p

Thank you all for the input, I guess the question now should be why is the server so slow. Maximum download that I get is 120KB/s. Used to get around 300KB/s on my Telkom 4Mbit Line.

And what is up with the IS news server. Can't even get a stable download speed.

If someone can clarify.

You usually only get full speed (on a 4mbps line) on the SAIX server when the material in question is cached. i.e. Someone in SA has downloaded the same articles recently.

That's regardless of whether it's at night/weekends or during the day. It probably won't work at all 0800-1800 during the week if the material isn't cached.

The IS server is just plain ***. Barely works at all if the material isn't cached, and I dunno if you'd get decent speeds even when it is. It doesn't have very good retention. (Stuff doesn't stay cached for long.)

Of course the IS server only works with IS bandwidth, and vice versa for the SAIX server.

I'm unable to connect to news.saix.net since yesterday. Anyone else having trouble?
