Hey There,

I'm just in the process of deciding what ADSL ISP package to purchase and noticed that WebAfrica is also offering IS ADSL packages with up to 28Gb local cap whereas SAIX doesn't. However WebAfrica states that IS use Satellite bandwidth for internation usage, which is good for downloads and browsing but lousy for gaming due to poor latencies.

My question is: surely if I will be playing games online I would most likely be using local servers anyway and so the Satellite bandwidth wouldn't matter too much?

I think i'm going for 384k ADSL.

So SAIX or IS? let me know what you think...

Thanks!

192k DSL is getting upgraded automatically to 384k in August.

go for a 1gb WebAfrica SAIX pre-paid account for use when the IS is sh*t (quite often...)

then go for a 2GB + 28GB local + OpenBrowse from www.openweb.co.za as your main account. OpenBrowse allows you to browse international http when you exceed your 2GB cap.

or, get 192k ADSL + 3GB SAIX from www.cybersmart.co.za ... they charge R100 for 3GB (only 192k option...)

I wouldnt say that they are exactly the same. I find when trying to access local sites on the SAIX network, they arent nearly as fast when using IS due to the bottleneck between IS and SAIX

Actually

For gaming... SAIX is shaped by default (unless you get an unshaped a/c). IS is not shaped - better for anything other than browsing and email. IMO if you get one or the other, go for IS - out of principal as well as common sense (30Gb local). Get SAIX only if required or if you experience probs. Openweb offer a "one month stand" option if you are in dire straits.

IS unshaped is cheaper than saix shaped! Intl latency is not the best, but I still get better VOIP than over SAIX shaped.

apparently IS is better because they have about 60% of local content.
I have not really noticed much difference between SAIX local and IS local...

Have you tested

Unshaped? I.e. skype to skype local, gaming local?
I know that the best use of unshaped is international, so maybe the opportunities to test this aren't as common.

During the week day its very noticable especially when u are remote desktoping.
