I need some help. Can anyone tell me if IS is slower than saix in regards of downloads, online gaming and also downloads from the IS news server.

I need to decide if I should get saix or IS account as it seems IS is cheaper.
At the moment I am paying R270 for atlantic for a 4gb cap with no local cap. Can anyone refer to me another ISP whom would give a better price and include local cap as well?

Thanks

I am assuming you are referring to 'regular' IS (via satellite). This would be slower than SAIX in terms of latency. Not really sure how the two compare with regards to downloads, though... I would guess SAIX is faster... For gaming, you are going to need the lowest latency bandwidth you can get, and for that you will need to consider (in order of preference): SAIX Unshaped (costs more than R120/GB!) and SAIX Shaped.

I would also like to recommend you give IS Fibre Semi-shaped a try. It's a relatively new offering that, as per my testing is vastly superior to SAIX (Shaped) in terms of international latency and download speeds. You can get a 5GB account from Nexus or OpenWeb for R299... Both of them provide you with a 'like-for-like' local cap (i.e. a 5GB package contains 5GB of usage + 5GB of local).

Also remember that these days you can easily get prepaid bandwidth of any type (SAIX Unshaped, SAIX Shaped, IS Fibre Semi-shaped) through WebAfrica, Axxess, etc. which I think is a great way to experiment with, to see which bandwidth suits your needs (get 1GB of each and do some testing).

SAIX is way faster + you have the added advantage that emails that you send actually arrive.
With IS some email addresses are automatically rejected, and others just never get the emails.
The only benefit of IS is their "uncapped" services - PERIOD !

SAIX based account has worked great for me so far. Have a few Telkom Internet accounts and if you capped you can topup online. Also used WebAfrica accounts. They have good pay as you go that does not expire at the end of the month.

It currently doesn't make sense to go with anyone other than Telkom Internet for connectivity. On my 4meg line with my TI account I get around 400kb/s most the time. On the same line at the same time of day on my IS account I get around 30kb/s average.

In short, IS is truly pathetic.

IF you play games on local servers like SGS IS IGAME ect ect then IS would be good to! Cause all local is fiber optic but the international is via satellite. Downloads won't make a difference. News server yes! Nothing much to say about the IS news server only that its kinda a major disaster. SAIX news server is much faster and better than IS :D If you get a telkom all access account its R79 for 1Gb international and 10GB local I.S. Is R69 for 10GB local so yo do the maths. :D

Here's what I'd do if I were you...

Get a 3GB account from Sainet for R139 per month. It's just plain old shaped SAIX with no local cap.

THEN:

In addition to your Sainet account, get a 2GB account from Telkom for R149. It's also shaped SAIX, BUT you get 20GB local SAIX bandwidth tacked on for you to use once your international cap is gone.

= R288 total

You'd then have 5GB total international cap, and 20GB local cap for R18 more per month.

You could get a 2GB Sainet instead, if you wanted to. That's R79 per month, and so you'd be paying R228 per month for 4GB int. and 20GB local. All of it SAIX.

Sainet are decent. There are a lot of Webafrica, Openweb and Axxess fanbois here. I've had all of those ISPs at one point or another, and Sainet's service is just as good, if not better. The products they sell are all exactly the same, of course.

I know SAINET is sooo cheap. But I think there is a once off fee of R49 ? Or is that only for oneprice accounts? I'm thinking of getting myself a Sainet account so cheap. :)

R99 Activation fee with SAINET - but thats a minor. Highly recommended. Their prices are real good!

I've been using my IS 2/28GB account for local downloading...havnt had any problems. Maxing out my bandwidth connection.

For international browsing, i havnt seen any speed difference between my IS and SAIX account.

If you want to download locally, get IS!!!!!!!

Muffen Man, since you also have SAIX and IS, maybe you can help me.

I also have both, but I have been unable to login to my IS account for well over a week now either at home or at work, but if I go to a friends house, it logs in fine.

Saix logs in both at work and home no problems.

IS won't authenticate. I am using a different modem at work to the one at home, different PC, everything is different, even the exchange.

Ever heard of such a thing ? IS is of course of no help.
