Saleem Karimjee is currently Senior Manager, Southern Africa Region, for the International Finance Corporation (IFC). He is based in Johannesburg, and is responsible for all IFC activities in South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. He also manages the IFC Johannesburg office, one of three IFC hubs in Africa.

IFC is a member of the World Bank family, and promotes economic development through the private sector, primarily by means of investments and advisory services.

Prior to taking up his current assignment in 2007, Saleem spent 4 years in Nairobi as IFC’s Eastern Africa Regional Manager, followed by 3½ years in Johannesburg formulating and implementing IFC’s strategy to identify and develop attractive financing and advisory opportunities in the Agribusiness and Infrastructure sectors across Sub-Saharan Africa. During this period, he served as IFC's representative on a variety of Company boards and committees.

Before moving to Africa, Saleem was based in IFC's Washington DC headquarters for 9 years, where he developed and executed investment transactions in various sectors and geographical regions, including the Power sector in Africa and the Manufacturing sector in Mexico, Venezuela and Peru. He also spent 18 months on a corporate assignment in Human Resource Management.

Saleem joined IFC in 1992, after completing an MBA at INSEAD in France. He also holds a Bachelors degree (1982) in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters degree (1985) in Robotics, both from Texas A & M University. Before earning his MBA, he was Chief Operating Officer of a large Agribusiness concern in Tanzania, where he also served on the board of directors of several other firms.

Saleem was brought up in Tanzania, and has also lived in France, Kenya, Mauritius, South Africa, the UK, and the USA.
