bought this a while back at good price. Currently 340G is used and 590 free... When i copy to it i get disk is full :/ ... i have a bad feeling this is the reason why this was at good price, anyone using it?

Did you format the disk before using it?

Perhaps open the enclosure (i take no responsibility for you voiding your warranty), and check the details on the disk itself?

OMG! , in attempt of trying to free the disk space as suggested by windows, i just ticked with ignorance clicked next. Next thing the hd is wiped out ... 350G worth of data.. movie collection, pics, musics, software programs, everything  ... am not gonna get a sleep, am grieving ... dark shade is upon me

You shouldn't get the disk full message any more... sometimes things go awry and a checkdisk will fix the amount of free space remaining. Maybe also check for hidden files etc.

Time to get the data recovery software...guaranteed you will recover all your files.

don't copy anything onto it, there is still a good chance you'll be able to recover your data.

windows error messages can be retarded. Might've been a MFT problem or something. A scandisk would have fixed it, but now that you've lost the data:

1. dont write to it AT ALL.
2. dont scandisk/checkdisk it at all unless you do it in readonly mode
3. check out R-Studio (http://www.data-recovery-software.net/) get the demo and see if it reads your lost files, with a bit of hunting you should be able to find a 'version'
4. when restoring files, restore them to a DIFFERENT drive.

Also for storage, 2.5"s suck. They tend to get way too hot and get disk errors from the heat over - often a horribly short amount of - time. You can watch them degrade with HDDSentinel.

:( i was stupid enough to format it after this cause i already gave up ... Now the data recovery software is pointless, i think this is some dark cloud hanging over me, all this is meant to happen. I'm a computer engineer but making the worse decisions tonight ... something is not right here

A normal format does not erase the data, it merely removes the 'index' to the location of the data.

Disconnect the drive and put it in the drawer before you do any more damage to your data. Go to bed and come back tomorrow for recovery suggestions.

Either way you are going to need another large drive to recover the data to.

Thanks ponder, will sleep and return tomorrow will probably be a little fresh. This gives me hope

Btw I found an app called getdataback ntfs that helped me a lot with 1 drive.

Hopefully all you did is a 'normal' quick format, not a full format which actually overwrites the data. You will know because a quick format will take a good few seconds, where as a full format will give you time to make coffee, drink it and read the paper.

There is lots of good data recovery software out there, I would recommend getdataback ntfs if you can find it.

Another option is Ontrack EasyRecovery Professional. Use your imagination as to where to find it.

Beware!! there is a worm virus doing the rounds that does the same thing. A friend of mine reported the same thing. He had an external hard dive that had only a few G's of data. Next thing he gets a report that his drive is full - not able to get any data on or off the drive. Had their IT guys running around looking for solutions. Apparently they said it was a worm virus. It also changed all the folders to .exe files...... So be warned.

I did quick format ... Will try these software thanks ...

I managed to scan quite a number of lost files using getbackdata (Recover My Files) program. The only issue is the naming, they are all prefixed with 'LostFile_' and suffixed with a number (i.e LostFile_AVI_25265776.avi) ... renaming these to the correct names will be a pain as i need to figure out what were they originally named (about 156 avi's & over 1000 mp3's) ... Is it the software i've used maybe?

Sounds like the MFT is perhaps messed up, and it's just given you a raw recovery :( Is there no folder structure either?

nope, and bulk of the video files recovered range from 2K to 10M and couple of valid sizes which do play (only 30% i would say) ... All MP3 are less than 1M, so yeah ... busy recovering pictures as i think they are more important. Will see tomorrow how they come out
