Samsung 40D5003

Most will stay away from any of the diluted Samsung LCDs, such as the D501's, D5002's, etc. Anything that isn't D550/D5000/D5500/D6000 etc. is a diluted version with 1 x HDMI port and no USB HD media player, perhaps limited menus too.

Furthermore, it depends on:

1) Room type (i.e. bedroom vs conservatory), lighting conditions, curtains, viewing times

If bright, go LCD/LED backlit LCD
If dim, go plasma

2) Viewing distance

If 2m from 40 - 50", and you have Full HD content, get a FHD TV
If, for example, 5m or so, and a mixture of SD/HD/FHD content, don't worry about the Full HD label as it is only marketing gimmick in this case.

3) Intended usage

See above. If FHD media and importantly close viewing distance, go FHD. If not, HD Ready is more than enough.

Bottom of the range LED, the clue is in the numbering scheme. Normally it would be a D5500 or something similar but when they start making it 5003 it normally has less features, ports and other things they can strip out.
PP this is Marine1 he's had his time on the whole viewing distances thing ;-) give the man a bells and let him relax a tad.

Thanks boss, reason I ask is I was offered this one at R4500-00 from a friend, brand new.

Not a bad price. But considering our detailed consultation of your situation, there are other TVs that suit your specific case better.

They could be cheaper, too.

Very stripped down model hey, so be aware of that, does only have one HDMI port, no USB and some features do seem to be missing.
