Anyone have one of these?
Does it work fully - smooth and fast menus?
Do all the networking functions (Youtube etc) actually work locally?

I bought a B650 just over 2+ years for R25,000.00 and I justified the price over other models because of the networking features it had. The media player is functional and does MKV etc, so a decent backup .... but the key feature Internet TV refused to work saying 'service not supported'. Going into the service menu and selecting a country doesn't help it.

Kind of pissed off Samsung would release and sell something so expensive that can't be operated in this country  and a little hesitation to buy something else

EDIT : Normal setup of ethernet to PC and ethernet to TV - no wifi

Ok - menu does seem quite responsive.

Now sure if the menu is HD though ... doesn't look as crisp. But at R1,400.00, I can't complain.

Both Makro and Dions Wired are R2,000.00 ... so seems cheap

Once you have plex up and running on it, then rather use YouTube etc... through plex.
My BD-D5500 is used for Plex and bluray discs (sometimes). Don't need the rest of the functions.

Also recently got this player. How do you run plex on it..? So you can stream mkv's etc from my pc..?

Yes. Install the Plex Server on your PC. Point it to your HDDs with content and that is it. No codecs or anything.

Then for the client, you can install that on your PC too and it will just work. Nothing zilch nada to configure.
For the BD-B5500 go to http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/34067-howto-install-samsung-plex-app/

The server IP in the OP no longer works though. There is another one that works somewhere in the last 2 pages.

FYI: www.plexapp.com

Another option for a nice small device is the LG ST600. Been struggling to find one locally though. May need to import.

EDIT: I have been asked to do a guide on a Plex setup for multiple devices in our homes, so going to do that this weekend. That will have explicit detail.

Great..! Thanks Mike.:)

Thinking again ... I'll have to think even more on the weekend :/

The SMART Hub is limited to 960 x 540 ... which is why it didn't look crisp. They also said there is definatley a difference between a BR and HTPC setup

But that is the GUI for the HUB. Not the movie playback surely? I have watched full HD movies via Plex on the bluray and it is superb quality. You can see for sure it is HD. I hope I am not getting so old that my eyes are starting to play serious tricks on me :)

LOL ... no, the movies are HD ;)

It's just the hub and (I assume?) the Plex client too?

*phew* Thought I was going a bit nuts there :)

The Plex client on the player looks identical to the one on my PC dude. So I think the limited screen res is just for the hubits-self.
It does not look that nice, but you are not in it for long so not too phased.

Yes, its just the hub screen (html5), content displays at its inherent res (up to 1080p). Its the same on TVs, like my D6000.

One of the upgrades for the 2012 E series Smart devices is full 1080p rendered hub display.

Interesting ...

So perhaps I should wait a while for development on the 'E' series. They tried selling me an E5900 at R1,700.00 and a 1080 menu system is quite an attraction

EDIT: Oh - I see the you say the Plex client is 1080 .... :)

Bit of a catch-22 if your planning on running the Plex client for Samsung.

Current version seems to fail on the new E series devices. Probably temporary, the developer has submitted his latest version to Samsung for certification & inclusion into the main Samsug Apps Store.

Latest feedback from him is Samsung have asked for ~30 mods/corrects to his code, so there may be a period when you can't use the Plex client if you go for a E model.

Ok - think I'll stick the D for now ;)

My issue is stock and I want to use my ebucks. Argh

Ok so managed to get plex installed on my pc and installed the app on the bluray player but it's not picking up any of my files...? :'/ I've tried looking under preferences in the PC app but there are literally no options for selecting folders etc..? Where am I supposed t do this from...?

What is the version that you're using on the player?

I've got the server, selected the folders, iPad sees and works perfectly - but the BR can't detect?

iPad (& Win/OSX clients) can discover PMS server automatically using Bonjour, but the Samsung client doesn't support this protocol. You must manually configure PMS server's IP in Preferences.

I did ... I made it exactly what the iPad see's.

When I make it that address, I don't get a 'Cannot Connect Error' - but rather I see 'Preference' and 'Quit' all over the screen. If I make it anything else, it says 'Cannot Connect' ... so it seems it does see it.

What is Plex Laika?
How did you install yours?
