The A35 comes in two options, the 128gb with 6gb Ram and the 256gb with 8gb Ram.Price difference is approx R1000.
I am not a gamer but do use multiple apps at the same time.
Should I save the 1k and just get the 6gb version?

The RAM size does not really matter, but you get double the storage capacity for R1k, depends on what you want to do with it.

I'd go for the larger storage space, but if budget is really tight, then go for the smaller one.

6/8 GB RAM... Dis baie... Also shows you how heavy the apps/OS have become on memory. My first Android phone had about 512MB, and it was the fastest phone back in the day.

For other android phones I would say 6GB is enough, but Samsung has terrible memory management so would recommend more.

With all the previous android phones I've had, when you press on the back button to exit an application, it completely closes the application. This is not the case with the Samsungs. They handle this like you've pressed the home button and the app stays running and you can only close the app from the recent apps.

Sounds like you had an Xiaomi, the only Android device out of the many I've had that did that. Which was also very annoying as it sometimes closed whatsapp or other things when it's memory management kicked in.
Though I've noticed with HyperOS it's not the case any more as my Redmi Pad has everything open and it's still relatively smooth.
Having your apps running in the background isn't really an issue, even on my sons A34 with 6GB there are no issues. I've seen more issues on SoCs like T606 or T610s and memory management though

I would go with the 8gb if R1k is not a big issue

side question: is SA now getting the different versions per model? we used to just get the one spec and that was it. higher memory etc would mean you go to the higher model eg A55

Only thing I can think of that will have an impact with the less ram, is 5G. Other than that, if you don't care for 5G (like me), then the 6GB should be fine.

If you don't mind spending the 1k, then go for it, there is benefit.

If you need to save, then save the 1k, 6gb ram should be sufficient.

What phone are you replacing ?

If you are the type that saves every single image/video from WhatsApp etc then go for the 256GB, other than that, you will be fine with 128GB

I've mostly had Huawei's. From what I recall it was easy to set an app not to close. When you quit applications using the back button, they would actually close. If you want them to stay open, you go home or recent instead so you can control what stays open. With the Samsung, the only option to actually close an app is from the recent screen.

I currently have an A52s 6GB, it's definitely not my favourite. My wife had one too and she had a lot of issues with hers running out of memory as she uses a lot of apps and she would have issues with the camera in particular. After closing all apps from recent or from device care, it would start working again. She has an S23 with 8GB now and that seems better. I don't use my phone much so I get those kinds of issues.

What I do find annoying is I have an app that relies on a session. With the Huawei, you close the app, it's closed. When you start it up again, you can log in. With the Samsung, it doesn't close so it tries to return you to where you were, but the session is not valid so then the app restarts itself. This process takes longer than just starting the app fresh.
I'm not sure if this is isolated - I have another app I feel takes longer when navigating back, but it is more graceful and shows the same screen regardless of how you enter so may just be perception.

yes, always get more memory and ram... the performance will hold up longer as it ages

good question, at release the limited memory and ram options for the A55 and A35 pushed me to the S23 FE

not regretting the buy but the higher spec option would have swayed me if available at a reasonable price

na I think you made the right choice. same principle applies, if the extra cost isn't a big issue get the better model.

My Redmi Note 11 has 4GB of RAM, doesnt have a problem with multiple apps and I haven't seen a "memory low" warning before.

Redmi is aggressive with memory management, will close apps all the time
