Got one from vodacom online. Had it three days, then the problems started. The google search window kept popping up while i was using the internet on the phone. Both the google search window with the qwerty keyboard, and the google search window with the search history.
while busy with whatsapp, the menu window keeps popping up.
when the phone is lying quietly on the table, on the home screen, the menu keeps popping up.

thus, after 33 minutes of holding, being passed around, and a clueless operator, vodacom decided to exchange to phone.

awesome.

new phone arrives. i had to re-install all my apps, since there is no option to back-up apps in the PC companion. thus, spent several megs of data on installing whatsapp, skype, etc again.

three days into new phone, it start with exactly the same story.

i do a hard reboot back to factory settings, and as soon as it reboots, it does it again.
i only installed whatsapp again. and things went well for a day or two, then again, back to square one.

phoned vodacom again, and i was told to go to samsung shop, they need to install a firmware update.
so off to vodaworld i go.
samsung shop in vodaworld cant help me, so off to vodacom repairs shop.

they take the phone, and tells me, it will take three hours to install required software or whatever. it is now three days later. supposedly, the phone has been sent to samsung to get the software uploaded.
i am stuck with the pathetic loan phone they gave me. which has no camera, no internet, no mms, thus, no email.
in my mind, if samsung has to re-upload the the software, then all phones they are selling, are all going to have the same issue, and every customer is going to have issues. not good.

i started using my old phone again, a banged up sony ericsson, so that i can at least check my mail and do business.

so, don't bother with the Galaxy Gio, there is obviously something very wrong with it.

Lol, but why on earth would you want a Galaxy anyway?

Nevermind the build quality, these phones are always a step or three behind Apple - unless the galaxy has facetime?

Check the newest pamphlets in the stores. There's a 'withdrawn' sticker all over the samsung gio ad. Guess they realized there is something wrong with it.

I would return the phone for a Galaxy Ace....think it's the same price.

The Galaxy Ace is much more like a thousand bucks for more real estate meaning slightly larger screen and a flash for the camera, 2 features you can live without. It really is the best bang for buck when it comes to Android devices. Its possible you have a faulty handset or the solution is update to the operating system: It comes with Android Froyo 2.2 but on research I have found out that Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 solves many of the issues. You can read the following articles:

I am purchasing one today and will wait for Samsung to roll out the update in about a month and if not I will root the phone myself.

Hey,

Just curious if your problem was ever sorted out? I recently got a Gio (flashed it with 2.3.5) - and I'm experiencing the same thing. Random search bar pop ups and vibrations, depending on which app I'm in. You get the same effect if you hold down the menu button. I've done some searches, and other android (non gio users) are getting the same thing, but no real answers as to how to solve it.

I must say, I notice it more while in whatsapp, but I don't know if its just a coincidence.

does anyone know if they sorted it out cos i see mtn have the gio for r49 a month ...and i need a new phone without breaking the bank ....is it something good

got this phone with my upgrade in august ... never had this problem. good entry level phone that doesn't break the bank

Had everybody sorted out their problems. Was going to get the R49 deal for the laaitie. Please let me know if the problems have been sorted! Thanx.
