Samsung Galaxy Note 2 SIM Locked on MTN

Hi all,

Just an FYI, my wife's MTN contract was up for renewal so we got the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (N7105). Turns out the phone is SIM locked so my Vodacom SIM card is useless in it.

I though they are not allowed to lock the phones?

I found this on MTN's site where they state that you can pay R570 to get in unlocked?

That's right it's illegal to lock phones. I get all my phones from Vodacom and none of them are locked. Not sure what you can do about it.

I don't think that the phone is network locked, unless you have tried another SIM in it and it doesn't work?

The only sort of lock that is normally applied is that should your phone fail whilst using another SIM, MTN will void the warranty AFAIK.

This was actually through Autopage but they claim to receive the phones from MTN as is.
