Hi,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S phone and it has been in for repairs at the Samsung Service Centre for four (4) times now. The problem I am experiencing is that the phone periodically switches itself off at random intervals. Samsung has already replaced the mainboard and reloaded the operating system several times.

After the last time I received the phone back I happened to stumble accross the real cause of my problem and it is software related and not hardware related.

I found that the phone was working 100% fine, until I configured my company's exchange email on the phone. Within an hour of this configuration, the phone swithed itself off again. I then removed the exchange email account and the phone has worked 100% fine since. Thus I feel fairly confident it is an issue with the exchange email app (Mail) that ships with the Galaxy S.

I am uning the following exchange sync settings.
  • Use secure connection (SSL) = Yes
  • Email check frequence = Never
  • Amount to synchronize = One day
  • Send email from this account by default = No
  • Notify me when mail arrives = Yes
  • Sync contacts from this account = No
  • Sync calendar from this account = Yes

Also, I should note that I am on the Cell C network.

What I would like to know is if any other Galaxy S owners have experienced similar problems?

Either way, I hope the Froyo update will sort out this issue.

Regards,
Gadnex

My settings below with no problems thus far. I'm with MTN.

Use secure connection (SSL) = Yes
Email check frequence = Never
Amount to synchronize = 3 Days
Send email from this account by default = Yes
Notify me when mail arrives = Yes
Sync contacts from this account = No
Sync calendar from this account = Yes

Running 2.1 rooted with OCLF.

Can't wait for Froyo...

Thanks LFC,

Amount to synchronize = 3 Days
Send email from this account by default = Yes

I just reloaded my exchange settings again as per your settings above that differered from mine. I will test and see if this works.

I am running the stock 2.1 Update 1 as loaded by the Samsung Service Centre.

I also cannot wait for Froyo.

You either need to wait for an official update or die waiting. Alternatively you could just flash it yourself but the warranty is then void for some strange reason.

Unfortunately the new Exchange setting did not work and I had to factory reset my phone again this morning.

I will run it like this, without exchange email for a couple a days, just to test if the phone works fine for longer periods of time without the exchange email.

Strange problem you have there man, hope it gets sorted with Froyo ;)

Yea, I agree. It is a strange problem. I work for one of the major banks and they have very strict security policies as you may imagine. Perhaps it is one of these security measures that triggers this bug.

My wife works for Standard Bank, i've setup exchange on her device, no prob as well...
