Samsung Galaxy S Gingerbread update available in SA

Woop.

Can anyone report of their success through kies or has everyone already resorted to custom roms by now for their updates?

Hmm - will wait for other peep's experiences

Worked fine for me. Updated this morning. Had no issues yet.

I have yet to get a successful update with Kies :(

This news would have been awesome if I hadn't spent a weekend playing with a Galaxy S2 :(

Worked for me, but I noticed Kiess fails to download update through certain ISP's, not sure if they block it.

I updated already on the 30th of June through Cell C, but I came across the battery drain bug on Saturday. It drained my battery overnight from 65% flat in 6 hours and I missed my alarm as a result causing me to blissfully oversleep. But on a better note the update through Kies went a lot better than my last time with Froyo which required a trip to the Samsung Centre at Vodaworld to fixed my bricked phone..

Being impressed enough with Gingerbread though I have now overcome my fear of flashing my phone to use unofficial ROMs and updated my phone since to 2.3.4 and so far it is much much better and the power usage is also much improved over Froyo.

Anybody know what Baseband and Firmware version this is? (can be found in Settings->About phone)

Currently running Darkys 10.1 custom rom, but being a 2.3.3 based rom it's still prone to the random battery drain issue (supposedly fixed in 2.3.4) and there is still some question as to which modem (or Baseband) gives the best tradeoff between performance and battery life for us SA users.

Firmware version is 2.3.3, Baseband is I9000XXJVO

Should I back up my phone before attempting the upgrade? :o My guess is that I should.

Mine was quick, round about 10 minutes, but still I would advise people to really check whether it would be worth your while to upgrade to 2.3.3 and whether you could live with the battery drain bug. I found to 2.3.4 to be much better and I'm using significantly less battery than before.

mine got stuck when trying to download the firmware to the phone, sat on 0% for about an hour....

gonna try again today.
