Samsung Galaxy S: problems with Wi-Fi

Hi there

I am experiencing problems with my Galaxy S losing connection to the internet while connected via Wi-Fi.

This happens when the phone is not being used for an extended period of time, like when I go to sleep I will find that the connection to the internet is lost when I wake up.

I have changed:
settings > wireless and network > wi-fi settings >advanced (found by pressing the menu key) > wi-fi sleep policy
to all the available settings, but nothing works.

Presently I have to switch wi-fi off and the back on to re-establish the internet connection.

I know that I am not the only one with this problem. Have a look at this thread on androidforums.com

Anybody else experiencing this? Do you have a solution?

No, just the Galaxy S. Strange behaviour, but as I said, lots of people are experiencing this problem. Look at this forum post.

I hope Samsung will be able to fix this problem, or that a MyBB user might have the solution.

Do you have a Galaxy S? Is it not doing this?
 
No I don't, but I want to buy one. And all these issues are scaring me a bit.

Did you upgrade to Android Froyo 2.2, yet?
 
No, I am running 2.1 that came with the phone. I am waiting for the 2.2 upgrade later this month (fingers crossed). I have the phone for a week now, and this is the only problem that I have with it.

I can absolutely recommend the phone. It is awesome!

The wi-fi issue is not a big problem – more of a minor annoyance that can be fixed by switching wi-fi off and back on again.

I am just hoping that someone might have a more permanent fix...
 
Froyo does fix quite a lot on the SGS, even though I'm using an unofficial ROM. My phone is for the most part bug free and utterly smooth and stutter free. I've never experienced the WiFi issue you're explaining here though...
 
When is the Froyo update being released? Or has it been released already?

OK, so I've rooted my phone using RyanZA's z4root and I applied his One Click Lag Fix.

1) Which custom Froyo ROM would you suggest for my Samsung Galaxy S?

2) Do I lose all my apps when applying a custom ROM?

3) Do I need to redo the One Click Lag Fix after applying a custom ROM?

4) Any other stuff I need to do after applying a custom ROM?

I'm using Doc_Kalpik's JPO-based V7.6.2.

When flashing Froyo for the first time, you will. Best would be to make a backup of all your apps and data with Titanium Backup (free from the Market) and restore the backups after flashing. It's an easy process and spares you the effort of downloading and installing everything again...

There are better alternatives to OCLF. I'm using the Universal Lag Fix (ULF) which is part of ClockWorkMod (CWM) Recovery. You will, however, need to UNDO your current lag fix before flashing the ROM.

Not much, really. Just enjoy the splendor of Froyo on this amazing device. :)

Just follow the steps to the letter on the site that I supplied - you can't go wrong. It really is dead simple after you've done it once and it shouldn't take you longer than about 20 minutes. Just make 100% sure your 3BP recovery works before attempting to flash any custom ROMs.

2.1) I had a quick look at the instructions and did not see anything about 3BP recovery. Does JPO include the 3 button recovery as it is made for the Galaxy S or should I first find a way of making 3BP recovery work?

2.2) Something called 2e recovery gets mentioned alot and it seems to be important to have it. How do I know if I have 2e recovery?

2.3) It is recommended to make a backup of your /efs. They give some code to do this. Where do I enter the code to backup /efs?

2.4) Will the Market still work or would I need to use something like Market-enabler?

No, you'll have to have it working before the time. You can't access Recovery mode without it, except through ADB, but then you'll have to plug in the phone while Android is up and running... Implement the 3BP fix first if your 3BP Recovery is not working. Trust me on this one... ;)

2e Recovery allows you to flash unsigned ZIP files to the phone. The 3BP fix includes 2e recovery, and so does CWM. So, again, do 3BP fix first and then flash CWM.

Try reading this link. Might be useful. For the record, I didn't backup my /efs beforehand. I realized later that SGS Toolbox creates a backup of your /efs in a folder called /ProductCodeCheck if you run a Product Code Check from SGS Toolbox. So get SGS Toolbox from the market and do that as well... Just as an extra precautionary measure.

Market will work, but not paid apps. You'll still need to use Market Access.
