Hi Guys,

So I finally upgraded from iPhone to an Android, and it's been awesome!

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 with SuperOneClick to use apps which needed Super User permissions.

Can I use OTA updates? Apparently there is one?

Will this simply unroot or will I be caught in a boot loop or whatever?

I'm still an Android n00b so any advice will be appreciated.

P.S. Why isn't there an official sticky for this phone? The other thread here is paaaaaages long and not very specific...

Thanks!

I don't have a lot of experience with rooting phones, but I have these two apps:

This one installed automatically when I rooted the phone
CWM Manager version: 3.0 by Chainfire
Current kernel: CF-Root 5.0

I downloaded this from the app store
If this can be done with Mobile Odin Lite v1.25

Maybe this is what you are looking for.

I used the CF-ROOT method detailed on the xda-developers forum (where all good android stuffs comes from) on the wifes S2 on the first day. Was painless compared to root+S-OFF on the HTC Desire.
I flashed that using ODIN and then just left the rom stock and rooted. You should be able to get the update but I'm not sure if it's OTA. I think you need to plug in to the samsung software.

Rather try out alternative roms instead of the official updated, which will probably not change a thing. You can always do what they call a "nandroid backup" which basically backs up everything, try out a rom or update or whatever, then just restore it if you dont like anything.

Now this weekend I flashed the phone with MIUI. Since it had CWM on I just downloaded the zip straight to the phoned, moved it to /sdcard for convenience and then flashed it. All up and running now.

Doing an OTA upgrade in most cases will unroot the phone, in same cases the update will simply invalidate and not install which is what happened to me on my Nexus S.

Some changes in an update can invalidate your SU and you will just need to flash an updated version of the SU file to restore your SU access, but ya i would agree with the custom rom idea.

Using the Cyanogen CM7 but looking at getting the ICS mod from MIUI as the current cyanogen version of it is lousy, however i could not get the DL link to work the last time i tried.
