PS: One way around the xchange thing would be to have gmail go pull your emails from your work box and then push it to your phone only when there is a new email.

Samsung galaxy S3 - ICS data hunger

I'm pretty sure exchange does that anyways... but the whole point is we shouldn't have to look for work-arounds. Android wants to be connected all the time. It's just like a few years ago when we were trying all kinds of fancy tricks to get Steam games activated or games/programs to skip auto-updating on our pathetic Telkom capped accounts and how everyone hated it. Once cheap uncapped came around, Steam became instantly loved and having stuff always up-to-date became a convenience. The same thing will happen if we get uncapped (or at least decent sized) mobile data plans.

mmm not sure...but as far as I know the only email service that is true push on Android is gmail and perhaps Yahoo. Reason for this is push is controlled by the C2DM google server. If your exchange server aint connected to the c2dm server, then push wont work. But perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of how it works can inform us.

Yes, a massive 14.73MB for the month of June.
But it does not tell me how much was used through Onavo, so I assume that it was the 201mb reported by ICS.
So if I did not have Onavo installed, I would have used 215MB, and that equates to a 6.8% saving.
Not really a substantial amount.
It also only lists the apps that it saved data on, yet I know that there are apps (like teamviewer) that I use where it will not be able to save on, and since all data goes through Onavo, this data then is not recorded.
NOPE 29mb per day when the phone is just idling.... few whattapp msgs, opened FB once and 5 emails (No attachments so less than 130kb for all)......
IT sucks bigtime as my wife's galaxy tab have ALL these things running 24/7, syncing every 30min nesw 24 etc.... and according to 3g watchdog she uses less than 1mb per day.... heard this from other people to...
She has the same version of FB on her tab that i have on my S3
SO the big question is.... Is it ICS that has increased the data hunger????

25MB in a WEEK? That's almost nothing, I don't see how you manage that actually. I only use my phone for things like browsing etc when I'm connected by wi-fi but even so it uses about 300MB in a month. The data bundles the SA networks give us with smartphones are beyond pathetic.
To think, I read an article yesterday about an American complaining that he has to pay $30 per month for an uncapped package on his smartphone when he's a light user, only using about 1-2GB per month.

Definitely not ICS. I have Gingerbread on my RAZR. Pretty much still the same usage as with Froyo or Eclair too. I call BS on the Tab using that little data though, doing all those things.. It's probably connected to the wi-fi at home/work.
yeah the tab is on wifi when at home.... but when at the office it runs on 3G and uses very little of the data..... so no BS!
I sat and compare them both last night.... If i use fb my data jumps incredibly and with the tab for the same use i only uses kb's..........

Nope, baked into the OS. hence the request for Google to add it.
Onavo comes close, but via a different method (Closing apps that tries to use 3G when set to WiFi only)

Sounds like your apps need to be configured to manual update intervals? As well as your widgets? That could be the only reason I can possibly imagine that your data is just disappearing.

The first thing I did when I got my HTC Desire HD, was to add a 2GB data bundle for the first month. Just to see how much data I would use if I totally went berserk with internet usage on my phone.
Well, it turned out my sweetspot was around 500MB a month, so from then on I purchased the 500MB data bundle, which turned into a 250MB data bundle with wi-fi at home (8ta 10GB with Huawei B683 router).
Facebook now chows data with the timeline feature, as it's photos and more photos. And with the Galaxy S3's resolution, it will show you all the nice pics in their full resolution, albeit at the expense of more data usage. It doesn't take a very clever person to figure that one out.
The other place where you can look, is under Settings > Accounts and sync. See it there are not other stuff enabled, like Stock, News and weather, etc. Then disable it and you should be fine.
Also, widgets running on your home screens with live feeds will also consume data.
Ok, enough of that.....my big question really is....if you can afford such an expensive phone, surely a 500MB/1GB data bundle bolted onto your contract will not be the end of your world?
I'm using the razr, still working on normal 2.3, so far used 75MB today, haven't used the market or downloaded anything that can recall, this is according to the moto data manager. Checked what apps are using so much, gallery is almost half of my total data consumption? Facebook, social, Instagram and play store using the rest.
In my experience, data usage can vary quite a bit depending on the specific Rom. My phone used more data while just 'idling' when I still had the stock Rom installed (Motorola Defy). My data usage decreased to less than 1Mb per day when I installed Cyanogenmod, with Google syncing (Gmail, Calender, Contacts) and Whatsapp running 24/7.
My sister recently started using a Samsung Galaxy Y Pro with the stock software. With only Whatsapp installed, that thing chows through anything between 5-10Mb per day. I guess certain stock Roms have some data hungry components, which are hard to control. The solution, as far as I am concerned, is to install a custom Rom. At the very least, it worked for me.
Ultimately, we shouldn't have to worry about a few megabytes this way or that way. If only SA's networks would wake up.

Its what I refer to as bloat, also the main reason I actually root my phone. Freece/uninstall the crap that eat unnisasary data/cpu and battery.
Also note something as minor as a Weather widget can eat data.
