Who brings in Samsung HDDs into SA? Have a 1TB drive in need of an RMA and the retail store won't take it back as the 1 year "store warranty" is over.

This is Africa, thanks in advance.

check your warranty period on samsungs site - if it's an external it may only be a 1yr warranty

Samsung would be the official distributor, since they already operate in SA there would be no reason they wouldn't bring them in. It is however entirely possible that companies bring Samsung drives into SA as gray imports (eg. not through official Samsung channels).

I know for a fact there are distributors in SA (I know their names too) that bring both Seagate and Western Digital products onto our shores that are out of region (and therefore gray).

In my opinion it isn't really a problem tho, unless the local people want to start refusing to do warranty swap outs. Luckily the new consumer protection act prohibits such practices now.

Probably from Sahara. 1yr warranty on all products from them, no matter what the manufacturer warranties are.

I hope the Consumer Protection Act nails them.

Well if I'm not mistaken you could take them to the small claims court and cite the act and paragraph being violated. Since most items will easily fall into the less than R7K category, should be easy ave.

The Samsung 500GB Eco Green 3.5 Inch Sata 2 HDD model HD502HI internal hdd is also 1 year "store warranty," and the samsung site says "Out of Service area" for south africa.

Code = 103 The product has been brought in from outside of this service region and cannot be serviced. Please contact your reseller or distributor.

Even though companies operate in SA it does not mean they distribute all their own products locally as illogical as it seems. From previous information posted here Samsung themselves said they do not bring hard drives into SA but they are brought in via other channels/distributors. Just repeating what someone mentioned here when they were exploring warranty issues.

Perhaps, but then it shouldn't say out of region for a warranty check in South Africa. They will have some kind of official distributor (hence the SA possibility on warranty check).

As I said, I've encountered the same with both Seagate and WD. Example: WD drives bought from Cyberdyne systems are gray (eg. warranty check says out of region if you use SA but works fine if you select USA). However when I bought a WD GP drive from Take2 it was in region for South Africa. Experienced the same with Seagate.

Agreed. If your WD does not come via DCC and Seagate via Asbis, Ingram or Rectron they are probably grey.

DCC and Mustek were surprisingly helpful in getting a drive replaced which I did not purchase from them. The drive was purcahsed from some store in town and their store warranty was out so I traced the drive to the original distributor.

Thats really great news stroebs, i never had any problems with the 2 distributors before. Well Done DCC & Mustek :)

this thread should be stickied as i am sure it will help others out there.
