Recently got a 500GB Samsung HDD (http://www.samsung.com/global/busin...72&type=61&subtype=63&model_cd=257&ppmi=1155#) and it's been acting rather strange. Everyday, after about 2 or so hours of operation, the drive freezes and my computer stops responding (I have my OS installed on that drive). Then, after a forced restart, everything goes back to normal untill the drive locks up again...

Motherboard is a GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3 (rev. 1) with latest bios (F13).

Any ideas as to what could be causing the problem? Or could it be a faulty drive?

Best bet is to backup, format and reinstall. If the problem still persists I would put it down to a bum drive.

But personally before getting there I would uninstall any software that I don't need, get yourself a program like CCleaner and clean up. Also defrag and make sure you have a decent anti virus / spyware program, it could be spyware that is causing your drama. If all of this fails then format.

Test with just the Samsung HDD attached. Then run Samsung HDD diagnostics.

Format the drive (not quick format), test it again. Then run diagnostics again.

If it still doesn't work then the drive is bad.

Unfortunately my OS is installed on that Samsung. I downloaded the Samsung HDD diagnostics thing, but I don't have any blank CD's atm. I've already formatted and reinstalled over the weekend, but still the problem persists.

Strangely enough, today the drive didn't freeze at all. Computer was on from 16h00 till 19h30 with no problems...

I have same drive for storage and had same problem, one day the SMART said bad things, then went away but it would freeze everything. I formatted it a few times and that seems to have worked for me (inbetween formats it didn't work so well).
