Anyone got the Samsung i600? Comments? Would you recommend this or not? Why?

I asked the same question a while back - got no replies, so looks like no one has it yet.

I'm supposed to be getting it tomorrow. I wanted to get it sooner but no one in Cape Town had any stock. I've done a great deal of research on this phone and all the reviews have been excellent. I'm a huge Nokia fan and never thought I would ever try a different make of phone but this phone sounds awesome.

I can upgrade on a "weekend" contract and am looking at a few options - the i600 being one - but it seems to be somewhat of a mystery item. With these cheaper contracts the choices are limited. I actually want a walkman-type phone that can play MP3's and has a FM radio - but the i600 is within reach and may make more sense (although without FM radio - and with a non-standard earphone socket). The SE W850 actually tops my list at present - but its a limited device compared to the i600 (the new SE W880 for some strange reason has no FM radio).

The i600 has absolutely everything I'm looking for (and more). The QWERTY keyboard is a very nice bonus. It's the only phone I could find which covered all my bases (besides the N95 which I'll never be able to afford - I'm also on a Weekender).

The only downside for me is indeed the camera. But the camera to isn't the most important feature, so I can survive with 1.3mp. As long as it has one.

My only worry is that it's a Samsung. I've heard very mixed reviews about Samsung as a make. But surprisingly, I'm willing to give it a try. I think it's really worth the risk. Hope to get it today!

I don't know much about the SE W850 but I know some people swear by SE phones.

I just received my i600, great phone with some incredible features. Gonna take me a while to get used to it, but well worth it.

Please share your impressions (the good, he bad, and the ugly) of the phone once you've gotten into it.

Right here's a mini review.

Firstly the good:

The phone comes with 2 batteries, one standard and one extended which is a nice touch. The extended battery doesn't make it to bulky and edges off the back nicely so the camera doesn't look like it sticks out as much. It also comes with a battery charger/cradle which also acts a case for you spare battery.

It's relatively easy to setup and you'll be using it within minutes of opening the package.

The screen is incredible. It's clear has great contrast and brightness is very good. I'm currently running it at 3 out of 5 brightness which is more than enough even in relative sunlight.

The Qwerty keyboard is small yet easy to use.

The phone comes with the default 'home screen' set to Windows default. Change it to Samsung's card wheel for ease of use and a much better looking theme.

HSDPA speeds are incredible. I ran a speed test yesterday and managed to get 318kb/s. The phone connects via Bluetooth PAN or via the USB cable.

Syncing is a breeze especially if running Windows Vista and Windows Mobile Device Center.

Surfing the web is easy and fast. Looking forward to DeepDish.

Wifi works great and you can set the phone to use your relevant internet connection via Wifi instead of 3G/HSDPA. It will also sync via Wifi.

The bad:

Vodacom disabled MSN Live which gives you access to Pocket Messenger and the usual live apps. I'm not to concerned about the rest of the features except for Messenger. Need to find a work around for that.

If you've never used Windows Mobile before it takes some getting used to in terms of finding where setting etc sit, but after a while it's becomes easy.

Other than that I'm really happy with the phone and enjoy all the features it offers.

Yeah, thanks for the great review superjuice. My phone never arrived at the cell shop yesterday like it was supposed to. I was told it would be here today, but I'm still waiting :( Really looking forward to unwrapping this beauty :)

I managed to get the i600 late yesterday afternoon. So far I'm very impressed. Going to take a while to get used to Windows Mobile and the QWERTY keyboard, but seems easy enough. I'm very surprised this phone wasn't more expensive. Got more features than most Nokia's out there (except N95) and it's a lot cheaper.

Can u use this phone as a HSDPA modem for a PC/Laptop ?

Yes you can. The manual says: "Using Internet Sharing, you can set your device to be used as an external modem for another device or computer
when connected via the USB port or Bluetooth." (p 150)

The internet connection sharing app on Windows Mobile is awesome ... and its about damn time to .. finnaly no need for drivers just connect to the bugger and you good to go at HSDPA speeds too ... Personally when you use the device as a modem you just dont get the same speed when you have a HSPDA enabled device
