The phone seems to drop calls fairly frequently and while on calls, the conversation often fades for about 10 seconds before returning.

I thought it may be due to the early firmware I'm running (I got the i780 about 6 months ago). I phoned the call centre/support and they had no idea how to even check the firmware - let alone that there were others and what they were! They put me through to Samsung in Vodaworld who also has no clue at all and me to contact later when technitions are available.

I'm will be phoning later - but am curious about other users :

What firmware do you have?
Have you had a firmware upgrade?
How do you find the phone performance?

Also - anyone have any idea about Windows Mobile 6.1? I heard this was initially due in October and then delayed.

My dad has the i780 and I played with it for a few days, decent phone.

How you check your firmware version:
Start->settings->System->Version
Then you should find your firmware version under mydevice, Version.

Also you can try www.modaco.com, look under their forums for Samsung i780.

Thanks ...

I wanted to do everything legit though ; so an official firmware done through Samsung SA and an official WM6.1 through Samsung.

Samsung are useless ... no one knows anything :

Me : 'What version do you have? I need to know mine is older and not the same as yours'
Him : 'er ... yes ... yours and mine are not the same ... so ... um ... cause we get ours from Samsung - not from the Internet'
Me : 'how do you know they're not the same? And mine is ON the phone from Samsung'
Him 'er.'

I just hung up and emailed them. Guess time to get rid of this phone ...

I'll check the orums now - thanks.

I've got my own firmware version - but according to google, they about 4 versions AHEAD of mine :/ The techies never seem to know what is going on in the real world.

I remember I took a Nokia to get a firmware upgrade about 5 years back. I had v2.1 and there was already a v2.3. I handed in my phone, left it there for day/night and collected the following day to find it still had v2.1.

The older Nokias where slightly more difficult to check firmware, and he though I'd never know the difference. He then told me 'oh, if it's the same as what you had, then you have the latest version'

Now I ask for information before they do anything

oh wow, so you're not liking the phone at all Dolby? i am really interested in getting one as i am due for an upgrade at the end of the month.

I think i780 is actually a really cool business phone.

somehow i dont think ill actually use all the features of that phone but i think i've been bitten by the smartphone bug and im really into one. going to have to see what happens and comes over me in the next few weeks..

Apart from the dropped calls and fading (which may be old firmware) I love the phone. Not particulaly sexy, but plenty features. If it's not the firmware, then maybe I just got a dud :/

With regards to WM6.1, I'm looking for threaded SMS's tbh. This is quite a large thing for me - and even my 5 year old Palm Treo has this.

And to add, the dropped calls really bugged me last night ; In a 5 minute conversation the phone dropped every 40 - 60 seconds without fail.

Flash the phone with new firmware (Probably due to a old Phone part ROM).

Just cut me off at 2.38 ... I phoned back ... cut me off at 2 minutes.

Fscking insane.

Ever tried dealing with Samsung? No one could assist with firmware ... no version numbers ... had no idea what I was talking about

Mine drops calls occasionally which I think is more the network operator than the software.

Currently running EFN's cooked WM 6.1 and have been for 3/4 months.
