In the competitive Qwerty-based smartphone market, the Nokia E71 remains the class-leading handset, with the new BlackBerry Bold not far behind. Samsung has work to do.
Samsung's new i780 smartphone is like a computer in your pocket. So much like one, in fact, that this Qwerty device comes with a mini trackpad for controlling an on screen cursor, and the operating system, Windows Mobile, has the look and feel of PC software.
How dreadful! The last thing I want to carry around is a device that behaves like a Windows PC. It might appeal to the grey-suited, bean-counter set who like the way the device integrates seamlessly with their companies' Microsoft-powered servers. But the i780 is decidedly unsexy.
Encased in black plastic, it is also in need of a design makeover. All this is a pity, because the i780 is a powerful phone: 3,6 Mbit/s 3G, integrated GPS and touch-screen (using finger or stylus).
