Innovative...to say the least!
The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 may have been announced last year, but locally it has only been available fairly recently. One may have expected the then-impressive specifications to be passable by now, but that is not the case. Reading the features list, the i8510 is still one of the most-advanced and feature-packed phones available on the market. In fact, we are convinced it is the most-advanced, non touch-screen phone from Samsung - and that says a lot, considering the vast amount of phones available from the manufacturer.
The INNOV8 is a classic slider phone, has a relatively thick profile, but not enough to make it look awkward or old. In fact, it looks quite stylish in the glossy black finish. The face of the phone features several basic buttons that allow you to navigate through all of the phone’s menus, without having to slide the phone open. One particularly interesting button is the touch-sensitive track pad, which can be quite frustrating when navigating the menus; but is an absolute pleasure to use when browsing Web pages. Most of the complaints we have about it are that there’s no way to adjust sensitivity, but after using it a while, it becomes natural and browsing the various menus on the phone becomes easy.
In terms of features, there really isn’t anything missing on the INNOV8 - there’s just about anything you would expect and need from a modern high-end mobile handset. The list is seemingly endless: GPS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA 7.2Mbps data speeds for ultra high-speed browsing, Bluetooth V2.0 connectivity and native DivX playback. The phone is more of a mobile entertainment device with telephonic abilities than a phone that happens to have all these features. A particularly impressive aspect of the phone is the 8MP camera, which for some reason seems to be a better camera than the one featured on some of the company’s other 8MP camera phones. The images just appear to be sharper and richer. The camera captures video at 30fps in VGA quality or 120fps in QVGA quality, and in still-shot mode supports panoramic images, which allow you to string together a set of eight pictures (which the phone stitches together to make one large, seamless image). The effect is very impressive, but sadly limited to each photo being taken at 640 x 480.
Video- and audio-playback capabilities are particularly impressive, thanks to the ARM 11 330MHz processor. The 3D games bundled with the phone look impressive and are butter smooth, much like the superior-quality DivX playback, which is crisp and allows one to read sub-titled movies even on a 2.8-inch display.
There is just so much to the INNOV8 that even now, it’s hard finding phones that can match it in terms of features or usability. It’s one of the best phones Samsung has ever produced.
