Samsung LA40D550 does not play m4v

Bought a Samsung LA40D550 from game yesterday for R4699 - pretty good deal :). Includes networking and media player - problem is it does not play m4v while these files are payed by all my computers (wmp/Win 7) as well as 2 media players (xtreamer and mede8er).

Play files over network from WD Mybook with twonkymedia as media server - works well for avi, mp3 etc. The issue is likely not network related as it does not play m4v off usb either and does play other formats over network. For some of the files it worked to simple rename to mp4, but not for all.

Was hoping for firmware upgrade, but when trying to upgrade via TV it does not find anything. Surely if something claims to be a media player it should play m4v - these are not copyright protected.

Anybody any experience on this? Someone from Samsung? I will be eternally grateful as I do not wish to convert - takes a long time and loss of quality.

Out of interest - why would you use the TV as a media player if you've got real media streamers?

I haven't seen the GUI on new Samsung TVs, but I've got B650 and find the GUI for Media 2.0 horrible. It's functional as it plays just about everything I have (I don't have a m4v file) .... but I'd much, much rather use a real media streamer with a fast, responsive HD menu system
 
This is not my only TV (kids, bedroom, etc) and will only use media player occasionally, but like to be able to access all my content on NAS from any device. And then I get away with one remote without having to go the Logitech Harmony One route (which works very well on 32" LG/Denon/Mede8er).

I like things to work :-).

M4V is a file container format used by Apple's iTunes application. The M4V file format is a video file format developed by Apple and is very close to MP4 format. The differences are the optional Apple's DRM copyright protection, and the treatment of AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio which is not standardized for the MP4 containe

The only previous LCD that I have owned is an LG that is about 4 years old (1st of the HD ones) and not built in media player, so don't really have anything to compare it with. My opinion is it is OK and I can live with it if I do not use it everyday, but not nearly as good as a media player.

Another reason I would like this to work - if I try to play an m4v the TV hangs for a while, powers off and powers on (guess that is a TV's reboot) - so quite annoying. Cannot see file extension in GUI.

Will look into DRM issue - going to swin with the kids now :-). Any other help will be welcome. As I said all other devices play these files so cannot see why Samsung media player won't.
 
For what it's worth, my Series 6 won't play either.

It doesn't hang or reboot - simply overlooks it

I have a 40" Series 5 and the built in media player is quite decent - played all the files that I had, but only used it for a while when my htpc was down. It's not xbmc but it is very responsive and very easy to use.
 
Hehe ... just rename the file to .mp4 ... same format, the Samsung metadata settings for m4v is just messed up.

@Dolby ... The Samsung internal players don't have the greatest menu systems, but they play just about any format without problems and it is just very easy to explain to your wife, mom, kids, etc. how to get into it (without switching sources on the TV) and how to get back to DSTv (just press exit). I actually use the internal on the LA46C750 more than the Openelec box standing next to the TV.
