Hoping someone can offer some advice. I was given a Samsung Omnia 7 by a friend yesterday. It's never been used and he decided to pass it on to me. Switched it on and it's definitely working. I was wondering whether it may still be worth anything or should I rather just hang on to it as a spare? Last thought: having never used a Windows Phone before I came away pretty impressed with the Windows 7 phone interface.

last time I checked it looked like one could not even install whatsapp on it.

IIRC the Omnia should be able to run WP7.8 atleast.
The OS is outdated and won't be supported much anymore but it is still pretty good.
Regarding Whatsapp, I'm not sure what the current state is of the 7.8 store but last time I had my Lumia 800 with 7.8 on it was last year May and I had Whatsapp install and running with no problems.
Just don't expect any new apps. If you want to stay current you'll need a WP8.1 capable device.

Pretty crappy considering a same gen Android phone can still install WhatsApp via the play sore.

It shows:
Works with
"Windows Phone 7.5" when I click your link.
Ohwell, like I said it's been more than a year since I last had 7.8 so I won't know.

Ok the OP will have to confirm then. On mine there is no option to install it on the Omnia7 (i dont have one anymore but there is still one linked to my profile).

It wants me to create a Live account before I can access the store. Free phone or not, that's pretty much where I draw the line

Creating a Live account is pretty much a minimum requirement for using the OS (apart from the basic phone bit). Have you tried using an iPhone without an itunes account or Android without a Google account?

It's free, not sure what the problem is.

There is no problem. This phone was given to me by a friend and it's nothing more than a curiosity. I don't plan to use it and it's not worth my time signing up for a Live account simply to check whether I can use Whatsapp in order to settle a difference of opinion in this thread. To be honest, if it was worth anything I'd already be trying to sell it. At this point I'm simply on the lookout for a friend or acquaintance who may be in need of a phone.

Clearly you hate Microsoft if creating a live account is such a big issue.
Sorry, when I read your OP I thought you wanted to use the phone not sell it, my bad, in that case yeah it's probably not worth much.

Also you don't have to settle the whatsapp question ^_^ was just answering Park@82's post, there's no difference in opinion

Setting up a live account will only take a minute :p .

IMO if whatsapp doesn't even work on it it wouldn't be worth buying. I sold mine new for R2k back when they were new, today it will probably be worth less than R500 depending on its condition and the above...

This has nothing to do with hating Microsoft Dr@g0nic. I think we can all agree that it is far more in vogue to hate Google or Apple these days.

Creating a live account is simply something I deem unnecessary at this point in time as I have no use for it aside from testing whether Whatsapp will install. And perhaps "a difference of opinion" was the incorrect choice of words but there was definitely some uncertainty regarding whether Whatsapp will work on the phone or not and eventually Park stated that I would have to confirm. I was happy to test this until prompted to create a Live account. That was my personal point of diminishing returns.

Let's put this thread to bed now, I'm sure the WM users have far more interesting things to discuss.

EDIT: If I'm coming off as dismissive or a jackass, I sincerely apologise to everyone. I truly do appreciate all your inputs regarding my questions. I simply don't think discussing this four year old phone any further is worth anyone's time.

I just upgraded from an Omnia 7 to a new Lumia 920 last week.
Omnia 7 is a good phone.
Served me well.
And I had Whatsapp on it which worked fine.
