On my phone now, so I can just give you the starting point

Download Odin

Then go to sammobile.com and download the official version you want

Then power your s3 up in download mode. I think it is either home+power+volume up key or the same combo but the down key

Then open up Odin and connect your s3

Then you can flash it by choosing pda and pointing it to the file you downloaded from sammobile.

Will look for a link with photos in for you

Just remember to choose the correct options in the options tab

And I would just take the newest one.

Those are not different S3's. They're different firmware releases.

Use the latest JB 4.3.

That's the recovery. Did you flash the stock ROM via Odin?

It will overwrite the custom recovery.

Someone did it for me years back. No clue what was done, or how

I was very happy - but when I give it away, I need stock. So I don't mind deleting everything

Flash the stock ROM via Odin as PhoneJunky said, it will return everything to stock.

Just do this;

- Go to download mode by powering your phone off and pressing home and volume down keys together until you see the warning screen.

- Plug your phone into the USB cable and into your PC with Odin running.

- You should see the phone listed in Odin. Select 'PDA' button and select the 'tar.md5' archive you downloaded. If the download is a ZIP file, unzip it. make sure 'Re-Partition' is unchecked before flashing.

- Press start and wait for Odin to flash your phone with the stock ROM. It’ll take a few minutes but once it’s completed you should get a green 'PASS' message in Odin. Your phone should now automatically reboot.

That's it. Phone back to stock.

I want to give my helper my old Samsung S3 - but around 4 years back, a technical friend of mine flashed it with custom (very cool!) Android. I'd like to give it to her stock.

In baby step terms - what do I need to download to do it? I remember Kies was a program mentioned and then the software in this link?

Why go back to stock? It's not going to get any security updates. Rather flash the latest Cyanogenmod Snapshot - http://download.cyanogenmod.org/get/jenkins/144360/cm-11-20160115-SNAPSHOT-XNH0E0O00N-i9300.zip

CM is just stock Android with a few addons. Fail to see how it's harder to master then Touchwiz...

Stock 4.3

There's actually a download mode when I press the power button. Didn't need to reboot

EDIT : Aside from over saturated screen and eye popping colours, this wasn't a bad little phone now that I'm playing with it !

Go to Settings -> Display -> Screen Mode -> and select Natural for a more colour accurate rendition of the display.
