Samsung SmartTV across LAN

Please clarify a bit more - a monitor for what? i.e. Monitor for a PC in a different location? or displaying streaming content from other PC? What exactly is your setup and what do you want to do? Display a desktop or stream content?

You can stream to the TV via network from Samsung android devices - works with the normal android media player. Also DLNA devices / servers can also be played directly from the TV (think Serviio for example).

Other option would be to do a small HTPC to the TV and then use that?

The TV is wall mounted in the office, and connected to the LAN. I want to know if I can use it as a monitor (sort of like a network projector) from my PC. Makes sense? Not streaming, but like a second monitor.

Do not think there is a built-in function like that.
You can always do HDMI over LAN baluns - something like this

Obviously then you must have another lan cable running?

Otherwise, what about a chromecast?

Allshare Play / Samsung Link only does video, photos and music IIRC.
It is also fairly buggy in my limited experience with it.

So, it all depends on what you want to display on the TV. If it is desktop mirroring, I do not think allshare can do that from a PC (only some supported smartphone / tablet devices).

Yes I've always maintained that hardware manufacturers suck at software development.

So what exactly do you want to display?
If it is screen mirroring your desktop, then you are pretty stuck and would need some separate components.
I personally use the HDMI over CAT5/6 baluns and it works pretty well.

If it is just music, video or images that you want to display, then DLNA server is most likely the easiest way to go.

Like I said, as a second display. Mirroring my PC's display. But it does seem that I would need external components. Guess we'll just get a 10m VGA cable :o

So the TV is in the same room? Yes, then a long cable would most likely be the easiest! Just bear in mind that VGA or DVI does not carry sound so if you want to do sound on the TV as well, then HDMI would most likely work better.

Good luck!

No sound necessary. I'd have thought something like this would be possible with such an expensive TV, seems like quite an oversight form Samsung here. Not sure if any others can do this.

Maybe look at a miracast device, i know you get a small device (less than 1k) to make your tv miracast compatible, (if it isnt), and then most intel screencards support miracast.

Then you can do presentations over lan/wifi to the tv, as if you plugged a vga cable. I use this in boardrooms for clients.

I try to buy miracast compatible projectors in the first place

If the host machine is Unix based you can get a DLNA experimental job to stream the screen to a DLNA stream.. Apparently that works.

Other ways is the usual Chromecast or AirPlay.. Or using a device with HDMI out to sync a screen.. Like iPad apps do for Mac as a 2nd screen.

No additional hardware will be purchased. We will just set up a laptop as a host machine with a VGA cable.
