Samsung spins off LCD, focus on OLED

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co, the world’s biggest maker of televisions, is shifting its focus towards new generation OLED display technology, and said it will spin off its loss-making LCD flat-screen business into an affiliate.

For OLED to be successful it will have to outperform PDP when it comes to price/size. Right now that does not seem a very likely scenario.

Awesome! But as Rouxenator says, prices will need to seriously drop. The average consumer will not be able to afford it. OLED FTW!

If the production gets to a high enough level it could be very close to current LCD panels price wise,I doubt it will be cheaper than plasma but it doesn't matter because its a superior product compared to plasma.

Remember the current LCD's were around R80 000-00 when they first launched compared to a mere R4599-00 for a 40 inch hd lcd now!
Mass production definitely brings prices down.

Comparing PDP to OLED isn't really a good comparison. PDPs target market is low cost and high refresh rate, that is pretty much the only advantages.

PDPs burn-in, have very high power usage, are heavy and have low resolution.

OLED, for example, Super AMOLED feature low power (even lower than LED LCDs), high resolution, incredible fast refresh rate.

Cellphones are already starting to use S-AMOLED exclusively (the new generation Andriod phones). Soon laptops will follow.

High-end LCD's or plasmas are still over R60 000... But granted they have improved a bit from those old models

Highlighted parts are a thing of the past. WRT resolution, the human eye can't distinguish 720p from 1080p. HD content on my plasma is awesome.

Show a computer desktop on your PDP and you'll see the difference ;)

I can definitely tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. Just depends on the resolution and size of the display. But I agree on a PDP you'll never be able to tell the difference.

Who uses it for that? 99% of people use their TV for just that... TV.

Agreed, but that is the easiest way to see the quality level of a display. If you can work perfectly on a computer with your TV then when you watch a series/movie you'll notice incredibly fine details on 1080p (tiny hears on the persons face, etc.)

You can definitely see the difference, depending on how far you sit from it. Problem is, most of the El Cheapo plasmas don't even display 720 resolution in the first place. Having a big-ass 50" screen with a resolution that 14" CRT monitors had almost 2 decades ago is just not OK. Proper 1920x1080 plasmas, now that's another story.

Yeah my point is that the old models that cost R80000 in the past now cost less than R5000.
It filters down as will the current tv's for those crazy prices....

Say WHAT?!!:wtf:

Lol you almost correct except for the minimal distance issue,ONLY if you are sitting further than the optimal distance will you not be able to tell the difference so its largely dependent on the size of screen and viewing distance....there are some charts online search for them and you'll realise that if you are sitting less than 3 meters from a 55inch screen then you will DEFINITELY see the difference between full HD and 720p...for a 32inch screen its around just under 2 meters.

Haha. Shame. People still fall for marketing gimmicks such as full HD? That's only really useful when playing games. I've watched both 720p and 1080p and I can't see a difference and neither can the people I've spoken to. I'm sure some of you visualphiles believe you can see a difference, though.

As I said, get a screen that allows you to rended Windows on your TV the same way you would render it on a computer screen.

Once you have a display like that, then start comparing 720p to 1080p.

No point trying to compare the two if you don't have a capable display device.

Seems you have convinced yourself that there is no difference tho, eventually you shall see ;)

Get off your high horse, sheeesh. Sit 1cm from your screen and now tell me 720 is the same as 1080p. There we go, you are incorrect. It all boils down to viewing distances, so if people are claiming they can see the difference between the resolutions, maybe, just maybe, they have either 1) better eyesight or 2) are sitting closer to the TV (which is likely since they are not on a horse like you are)

You can definitely see the difference when you are watching a large screen. I have a Samsung 51" 720p PDP and my buddy has the full HD version. You can clearly notice the different in quality.

I dunno the difference between 720p and 1080p mkv is noticeable, granted most of my stuff is in 720 but i do download the odd 1080 movie. In all honesty the different is not enough to make me want to download a file 2-10 times larger but i can see the difference.

Believe it or not many people are now using their tv's as monitors for gaming, work and so on. They make amazing monitors and consider oled is cheaper to manufacture they should be able to beat lcd and plasma pricing at some point. New tech is always kuk expensive but boy once the price drops it usually plummets :D. I wonder how much a top end plasma or lcd cost when it was first released.

I guarantee you leave me your plasma for a day, I'll damage it.

I sold my plasma because of retention
13 months back we went to buy a TV, and the Viera on display was burned
My friend has a PS51 D550, and he moans about retention
Samsung - the manufacturer - still warns about running in, retention and burn in

From my experience, the only guys that have no issues whatsoever, are the pro plasma MyBBs.

You speaking to the wrong people lol seriously like i said got do some proper research about what I said before you post silly comments like the one above.

To clarify...if you have a 32inch full hd lcd and a 32 inch 720 lcd side by side and you sit closer than 1.8m away you will see the difference. The minute you move further away say 3 meters then it becomes impossible for you to see the difference as your eye cant pick it up.

With a 55inch the distance is around 3 meters,Ive tried this myself so I really don't know why you would dismiss this as falling for marketing gimmicks?Sure if you sitting far from your small tv don't bother with full hd.....but if you sitting close to a large tv then it becomes very very apparent.

Do you and these "people Ive spoken" to only own small lcd tvs and sit far from them?It definitely seems like it....
