Hi Guys

Thinking about getting myself this baby.

Ive always owned a Sony brand TV but Samsung seem to have overtaken them in the TV dept.
Are there any other serious contenders to consider?

Also where can I get the best deal? Should I wait for the new year for a price drop?

Nice TV, to be used for?

Samsung D8000 plasma
Panasonic plasma

Usage in order of priority

1. DSTV
2. Media player
3. PS3 games

WRT Plasma....I'm still not sure on the issue with "reflection"
Is the reflection of plasma similar to the old CRT screens?

Entry level plasma is similar to CRT. High end (and some mid) plasmas have anti reflective coatings.

LEDs are also glossy these days (especially mid - high end, I'd imagine they have AR coating too)... So neither will give you an entirely non reflective matt screen.

What's the room like? Direct sunlight on the TV?

Mid/high end plasma will give you about 63" at R40k or 50" at R20 - R25k. Generally more suitable for TV and gaming as well. Better value.

Of course you should go and test both in a test room with similar lighting conditions from your viewing distance. ;)

High end Panasonic Viera plasmas have been best TVs in the world for consecutive years.

Thanks for all the replies PostmanPot [bows down]....I know u the guru with all this stuff ;)

With regards to sunlight....not direct on TV but side windows though not very bright room.

I dont see Panasonics advertised much though.

The plasmas seem better value...u think they just underated?

Damn. R50k on a TV.

I work very hard.
Dont drink, smoke or womanise so I guess I'm entitled to and deserve some personal pleasure.:D

My opinion, an awesome TV feature and picture wise, but it does have a quirk. Its light distribution is not 100% even, I think it has something to do with the fact that it has almost zero bezel, so they can't tension the light guide panel perfectly flat.

Had one in the office to play around with for a few days and when the display is near completely black you notice slightly brighter vertical columns across the screen. That said when you feed it a signal (esp. FHD) its not perceivable and you'll be presented with a jaw dropping picture.

So depends on how particular your are. For that money I would be and would spend some time/effort comparing it to other peer models. Try to find some AV specialist stores that bring in the Panasonic NeoPlasmas (GT30 & VT30), also compare to the monster Samsung 64D8000 plasma, and don't forget Sony's big boy the 55HX925 which unlike the D8000's edge lit LED, has full array LED backlighting.

Fair enough :) didn't mean to be condescending, certainly wish I had R50k to spend on a TV and also work hard but maybe not hard enough.
