I've always been a bit wary of LG as a brand in the same way I once was with Samsung. Samsung won me round with the S2 and subsequently the Note, S3 and S4 and now I own a Samsung TV and blu-ray player.

With LG, I owned a Viewty phone and thought what a POS, but since then I've had a Nexus 4 and now I'm the happy owner of a new Nexus 5.

Now when it comes to TV's they both have their fans and are seen as somewhat equal (in my mind at least), but what about smart phones now? Seems to me that LG are winning huge plaudits with the G2 and the Nexus 4 and 5 have lifted their profile up to a level where I'm now wondering if they are going to be seen as an equal at the top table of cell phone manufacturers and at least equal or better to Samsung and indeed Apple, HTC and all?

Well, they are planning on doing this...

EDIT: Oops, didn't fully read your post.

LG are definitely making inroads into establishing themselves as a viable competitor in the smartphone market. The Nexus devices have been a huge part of that, sure, but the G2 and G Pro are excellent devices in their own right, with some nifty innovations of their own. The G Pad 8.3 is also an excellent tablet.

Would love to see another top-tier smartphone manufacturer, and I have been pleasantly surprised with LG's implementation of the Nexus devices (have also owned the 4, and now the 5). I can certainly see them competing with the more established brands, but not at the same scale, at least not for a while.

Sure, but I'm thinking the image has improved enormously in the last year and people who would never be seen dead carrying an LG phone might now be considering them as an option if the current trend continues.

And that goes for the build quality of a device, the mental attitude towards LG phones as somewhat inferior down market products, and of course the trendy brand conscious people who carry only the 'best'.

LG is definitely improving. I would have never recommended an LG phone to anyone before and as a cell phone I saw them as cheap and not durable at all. Now looking back at their latest devices, they have a solid range of devices. The G2 is giving competition a run for their money and I know people which chose that over the S4 and are delighted with their choice. Personally I got my sister an LG L5 II and an employee an L9. Both phones haven't given any issues (granted, they are less than 6 months old but a Galaxy Fame I got at the same time had the motherboard replaced last month :/ ). They are now releasing quality products which represent value for money. In terms of being the best, they just need to prove themselves in terms of durability and update schedules.

I would get an LG phone before a Samsung phone anytime. I currently use an LG manufactured Nexus 5, and it is nice. The built quality is excellent. Even though it is plastic, it's not the cheap and nasty stuff that Samsung uses. As a matter of fact I really don't know why Samsung sells so many phones because HTC and LG are making far better phone at the moment.

To be honest, I don't see either LG I've mentioned in my previous posts having a better quality shell compared to my Note 2 and the S4 Mini and Fame being used in my household. I'm not saying that Sammy is great, just saying that LG isn't much better with most of their phones...

I had the S2, Note 1 and 2, and now the LG G2. It is fantastic. I was very happy with Samsung, but I am also very delighted with the G2!

How do you feel the Note 2 compares to the G2? I might look at moving to the G2 later this year. Did you feel a difference with the very slightly smaller screen?

Hardly. Really love this screen. It is only very slightly smaller, but in a much more compact phone - the bezel is very thin!

Typing feels just as easy.

Samsung > LG by a long shot when it comes to televisions.

It's not that LG is terrible, just that Samsung has gone above and beyond in recent years when it comes to TV.

I agree with you, but just remember that until quite recently, LG was the sole manufacturer of IPS panels. Even @pple used those panels. Samsung (and Sony Bravia) used the PVA panels manufactured by Samsung, which were not quite in the same class as IPS.

Having said that, I'm still happy with my 6yr old HP monitor with a PVA panel (colour reproduction is still way better than some of the modern monitors), and my 4yr old Sony Bravia 42".

Didn't Sharp also do IPS?

LG for desktop class has always been decent since like you say Apple often used them and I think even Dell with companies like Lacie just rebranding.

But TV is another story.

AFAIK, Sharp started making IPS panels for Sony after Sony got miffed with Samsung. I lost interest in the whole saga after I got my TV.

FWIW, IPS was a joint venture between Phillips and LG, whereas PVA was between Sony and Samsung. Most of the other manufacturers produced TN panels (all 5 of them at that time).

There used to be a site where you could find exactly which panel was in which monitor or TV.

If they can stop their current path of by and large copying Samsung's smartphone strategy, and relied on their products more, they will certainly increase in popularity. I think that most people wouldn't consider an LG because of the garbage devices that they have brought out before, and because right now they are Samsung copyists.

I've played around with the G2 and G Pro. Both are well built devices, but share the same problem as most Samsung devices- they feel cheaper compared to a comparable HTC or Sony. Which is why they should build more in-house devices to the standards that they have built the Nexus devices by, IMO.

An LG device with a soft touch back, classy yet clean design paradigm and no flashy plastic would do wonders for their image.

TFTCentral normally does. Haven't perused the site in a while though.

That's one aspect that I distaste LG for. They seem to want to copy Samsung for design. The nasty glossy plastic, over designed and flash UI are all inspired by Samsung. I was happy that LG, on the G2, dropped the hardware button that Samsung copied from Apple, but I heard they will be bringing it back on their new flagship. :what:
For as long as they don't create their own identity they will always be seen as a Samsung alternative.
