Hi all, I am in the market for a new TV and well let’s just say a 51 cm is of no reasonable use any more.
I am looking at this: Sony 40" (102cm) Full HD LCD TV (from Makro)
And an equivalent 40” Samsung.
Besides price differences and brand name differences which would be recommended.
I just need a real life recommendation, instead of reading reviews, before handing out substantial amounts of money.

Thanks,
X

I've heard before that Samsung makes the LCD screen panels for Sony but they are not allowed to put the same quality panels on their own LCD TVs. Not sure if that agreement has expired.

I went in the store to get a Sony and walked out with a Samsung. IQ is negligable and recent Samsung LCDs are rated amoung the best in price

It's a total tossup dude.

They are so close, but Samsung still running their older tech B Series ATM AFAIK :). Sony is newer tech, but still have the old bravia engine?

I owned a Samsung for 1 day and took it back....the picture quality was excellent, but I had a problem with the Sammy....it had too many "options for tweaking". If you like tinkering and tweaking your stuff, then go for the Samsung. I have no idea on the Sonys. I have never liked the picture quality of Sonys and don't think that their products are that good at all. I am considering an older gen 40'' Sony LCD though, once they dump them on the market for my PS3.

If you are planning an LCD, I would advise you to consider a model with the 100Hz motionflow tech...it makes a considerable difference in the viewing experience. To get an idea of models LCDs without this 100Hz have a look at the ESPN sport channel when they have those Brazilian games on....that "smearing of the pitch" and stuff is very similar....

I have a 32 inch Panasonic HD-ready LCD....with 100Hz motioncontrol....and very, very few tinkering options, but with a superb picture...

I've looked at Sony and Samsung side-by-side and I can honestly say I don't know what the fuss is about when it comes to Sony. Samsung just looks better IMO.

Sony is way better than Samsung in general. Samsung products, while a powerful marketing machine, generally don't last. Specifically their computers (ask anyone who does lap top repairs.) But Samsung does generally come in cheaper. I've never owned a samsung tv so I can't really offer an opinion there.

Well, sony has the 46EX700 on the market now, and i'm looking at it. Does anyone know what the comparable 2010 samsung is?

Been using Samsung for years and never had a problem (well one but it was covered by warrenty and I got a free upgrade to a better screen). Cheaper than Sony, same quality

Quality wise its all the same not much difference with that

What I suggest is go to a place that sells them both get them to play the same thing on both of them and see which one you prefer

I suggest you don't play a Bluray or DSTV HD though them as a test most LCD TV's play that well and that is not a good test because most of the stuff you going to put through there at the end of the day is SD stuff

Take an old DVD with you or get them to connect it to a SD DSTV channel compare them this will be a true test of the picture engines the way is shows lower quality pictures then see which one you like more.

I bought the older Model 40" Sony and I was also looking at the 46" Samsung series 4 at the same time HD stuff was perfect on both but I played a normal DVD though them and the Samsung was rubbish it was all pixilated and the sony was still pritty good so I went with the Sony

Sony is much better!

Their Bravia engine compared to Samsung is superb.

Besides it doesn't need oil like the Samsung!

Just because you own a Sony doesn't mean it's the holy grail of HDTV's; it's not! Samsung tops CNet's top HDTV list; heck even an LG is above everything Sony on that list. Don't base your buying decision solely on brand.

Best LED TV: Samsung
Best LCD TV: Samsung
Best 5 LCD TV's:
  1. Samsung UNB8500 series
  2. LG LE8500 series
  3. Samsung PNB850/860 series
  4. LG LH90 series
  5. Vizio VF551XVT
