"Essentially we are de-linking salaries from rank. Because of the sheer size of the defence force a great number of our soldiers are trapped in particular ranks with no prospect of improvement of their salaries," she said.

This is great news and something members of the SANDF has been asking for years now. It has several implications, none bad. Not only the salary increases but it will also help towards pensions.

Despite what the public opinion is, there are a lot of SANDF members who are professional and dedicated in what they do, but the realities of the real world makes it difficult. Many members are stuck in a rank with no option for advancement, forcing the members to either resign and look for other employment or to move out of his/her line of expertise, wasting the effort of training and the experience the member had, just to be able to receive a higher salary.

This will also bring relief to the people who are affected by AA, it will no longer hurt their salaries.

Want to take a bet on that?

Why not ?

Let me explain by using my own section as an example. We have 3 Sergeant posts, 3 Flight Sergeant posts and 1 Warrant Officer post. So you have 3 FSgts who compete for the WO post, never mind the Sgts who are stuck and cannot advance. A WO post can take along time to become vacant, so everybody is stuck where they are, unless they move out of their mustering, something which is rather difficult and a waste IMO.
Since currently the pay and pension is linked to a rank, these people must be content to be stuck for a long time.

This is where the new system will be helpful.

In the Army it is much worse, there are Corporals who are more than 20 years stuck in their line, they are good at what they do, but the rank and post structure do not allow them to receive a better rank, thus they are stuck in the rank. Often the Officer in charge try to help these guys/girls with extra allowances or so, but its is not always possible. They will also now benefit from the new system.

What about aiming for an officer's rank ?

Depends on what you do. In the SAAF certain positions require you to be an Officer with no choice (pilots, ATC etc.) As a NCO you can apply to become an Officer, but in most cases this means you will have to move out of you mustering.
For example, I am a Photographer, if I become an Officer I will be a Technical Officer and will no longer do photography, but will rather be like a manager sitting behind a desk all the time. It will simply not be satisfactory and also I never joined to sit behind a desk, I prefer my mustering.

The anc seems to try to do everything assbackwards, how long is it going to take them to realise this wont work and how much is it going to cost us.

My guess is after the strikes because some ex MK aids patient didn't get an increase for rolling over in bed or when they start shooting everything and anything thats not got the same skin colour as them again, because he/she gave them an order but earns less money.

Somehow, someway, an anc cadre is going to make a lot of money off of this and damn the consequences or maybe the sick ward we call the military threatened to not vote for the kfc and t-shirt brigade unless they get a snout nearer the gravy trough this time.

I have a friend who studied with me last year, he was a a lieutenant and basically took up studying through the army because he couldn't move out and start a family with his salary, it just didn't pay enough.

I can just see how some pockets are going to be lined because of this.

It would appear that the personnel budget is too high and as a result operations and development suffer. With no increase projected how will this be funded or at the expense of what, less ops, less development?

If the military fires the useless ones taking up space and money there wouldn't be a problem with advancement.

Absorbing a useless bunch of hospital cases was a mistake, keeping them around and paying for them to sit and slowly die is worse.
What exactly is a 40kg aids patient lying in a barracks dying good for in the military and while I'm being nasty, why the heck aren't the ones screwing goats and prostitutes or the ones running a shebeen out of the barracks fired on the spot along with the officers that is supposed to be in charge of them.

Get rid of the bloody union as well, it's the military not a bloody shop making hose clamps, then fire everyone up to and including the ministers responsible for letting things go this far and put someone in charge with a brain and that is not a political deployee.

Get the lazy bastards up and fit, what is a troop transport for twelve's use if it can carry the driver and two fat arses max into battle and they can't even fit into their webbing.
When they can eventually move without leaving a sweat trail reeking of kfc behind that a blind, nose-less man can follow, get them to patrol our borders and coast like they should and train them to be soldiers and not just a vote in the bag.

Get the basics right and you don't have to leapfrog pay scales that is only going to cause strife in the end.
