Two men were jailed for life on Friday for killing a man in a robbery at the Builders Warehouse outlet in Rivonia, Johannesburg, police said.
Godfrey Ndebele and Master Nkomo shot dead a man outside the shop on February 22 last year, Captain Kym Cloete said.
Employees and security were opening the business for the day when they were approached by a man dressed in security uniform, Cloete said at the time.
They let him in because he was in uniform, but he held them at gunpoint and was joined by three other men.
"The suspects demanded cash, but when the employee was unable to unlock the safe he was assaulted," Cloete said.
The men then attempted to flee the scene.
"In what appears to have been an attempt to secure a getaway vehicle, they confronted a member of the public who was parked in the parking lot," said Cloete.
"A scuffle ensued and... the owner of the vehicle was shot and fatally wounded."
The two men were arrested a short while later.
The High Court in Johannesburg handed them life sentences for the murder, 15 years for robbery, an additional five years for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, and 18 months for contravention of the Firearms Control Act.
