So there's a protest to be staged outside the JSE from 3am tomorrow morning.

The proponents on twatter are demanding that no work be done in sandton at all tomorrow... They want to bring the economy to a halt because of gender based violence...

Hearing reports of expectations of 6-10k people...

So, who's working from home?

I am, but I'm far from Sandton so I'm all good :p

6 - 10k people? So what is the realistic number? 700?

LoL "gender" based violence. Violence is violence. Luckily for me I'm far away and will thus be at work

You mean, the usual suspects want to shut something down, and this time are using gender violence as their alibi.

From 3 am?
That's earlier than even I get in to work.
I hear rumours they may be coming past my office, so I'm making plans to blend in. :D

Is there a link or are we matching IOL standards now?
There's no single news article.
Check out #SandtonShutdown on twitter.
We also have internal comms from our risk management team at work.

By now most of you are aware that we are expecting a planned protest march on Friday 13th September by a “coalition” of 70 civil society activist groups, including Rise Up Against Gender Based Violence and Sonke Gender Justice, under the hashtag, #SandtonShutdown.
The #SandtonShutdown call is an effort to ask Corporate SA to take part in the demonstration and also request funding for the initiative
According to the most recent updates received no violent actions are being anticipated during these actions. However the exact number of participants can not be confirmed and heavy traffic congestion and possible road closures can be expected.

It has been reiterated that this is a sit-in protest in front of the JSE building in Gwen Lane.
Even though JMPD will be managing and monitoring the activities it may still result in delay or partial denial of access on the day.
Protesters participating in the demonstration is expected to arrive by 03h00 (yes 3am) to gather outside the JSE and possibly various intersections of Sandton.

The expectation is that the protesters will hand over the memorandum to the JSE between 10am and 11am.

We can expect early morning picketing at intersection in and around Sandton CBD

The plan is to create a dedicated area for the protest at cnr Rivonia Road and Maude Street outside the Marc and all along Maude Street

Authorities are expecting 2900 protesters that will arrive by bus, this excludes protesters making their own way to Sandton.

Yeah, emails are being sent out here at Discovery about the possible disruption, but it's business as usual.
Only hassle I expect is getting out of the Gautrain station.

Then it's not gender based is it?
They're only protesting the killing of women by men. So, yes gender based violence. They don't care what men do to each other, just leave women out of it.

Please explain to me one thing. Why call it #sandtonshutdown when all you are going to do is sit around JSE. Call it #JSEsitdown.

I was hoping you would close Sandton dammit, I would love to work from home tomorrow.

(please note I do not endorse gender based violence and I am only poking harmless fun at the hashtag handle)

Either they're morons who think that all companies operate via the JSE, or the sit-in thing is a lie in order to get permission from the authorities for the gathering and they intend being a lot more disruptive.

My money is on option b - especially given the early start time. That sounds very much like they want to blockade the CBD.
