Sanral explains why SA will always have potholes

The persistent rains in recent months across large parts of Gauteng and the northern provinces have again led to frustration among road users who have to deal with potholes, mostly on roads that are not managed by SANRAL, the roads agency has said in a statement.

There you have uit die perd se bek:

“If no maintenance is performed on these cracks, then with the next rains, water is able to penetrate through these surface cracks to reach underlying crushed rock and gravel layers that are used in the construction of most South African roads.”

Haha, a very wise and previously unknown observation by Sanral network manager, Louw Kannemeyer. :erm:

I know it's more expensive but why don't they just use concrete instead of traditional Tar (asphalt) especially in areas where they constantly ending up repairing and repaving . A concrete road will only need maintenance in what at least 30 years, Tar every 7 years if you really lucky.
Any one remember when the N1 in joburg was mostly concrete? needed less maintenance, until Sanral dcided on improving this and using tar.

Asphalt is a lot cheaper than concrete and doesn't need to "cure" as long as concrete but I do agree with concrete being a better option. The only concrete type road that I know of is an intersection that has been there for decades without showing any wear. Asphalt also doesn't do turning of cars on them well at all and eventually the bonding in the asphalt will disappear and cause water damage. Asphalt can keep very long provided it is maintained and this is something councils, Sanral etc don't know or I don't know what. Also the research going into oil to extract more usable oil from what used to be used for asphalt has caused asphalt's quality to diminish from what it was years back.

Most of the very busy and well used highways in the USA are made of concrete. In LA there is little evidence of road damage and potholes as I have seen in Jhb

I remember when everyone I knew, called it the concrete highway.

With the tenderpreneership of the cadres no matter what is used the specs will be substandard and will not last even though the full price is paid.

SANRAL contracts mainly go to Raubex, Basil Read and Steffanutin Stocks... Not exactly cadres.

Not quite. I was asked by a broker to insure a cadre whom had just got a tender to resurface the Midrand section of the highway.
He had nothing except the money so what's the first things he buys, X6, X5 and 5 325i BMW's.
Then he went to go buy bakkies to start his business, not a single piece of plant or machinery in his possession.
Contract payment R198 000 000.

I said I didn't want to quote on this insurance.

Very few contractors own machinery, even in our projects at R1 billion + they're rented, so it's not really a criteria !

And I suppose it's usual that they don't have a clue about the job either?

This was a cadre full stop, one which had no experience or idea except the idea of wasting our tax money.

Then ok.

But for having worked a lot along SANRAL (never for them but projects using road reserve), I've never seen a tenderpreneur and almost only the major construction companies.

Was going from Boksburg down Airport Rd 2 years ago with cracks clearly visible. I go thinking to myself when it starts to rain this is going to turn into a catastrophe. What do you know 2 weeks later the cracks became huge potholes. I think this was the last major rain we had just before the drought. What would have cost tens of thousands turned into hundreds of thousands.

Yes there will always be potholes while maintenance isn't done and funds are 'diverted' elsewhere.

When I look at some of the roads I do think they try and build them as cheap as possible using sound outdated practices?
Working in a factory overseas we had asphalt roads around the factory which with the heavy trucks big sink puddles used to appear and always being filled in.
They did the following by digging down each side of the roadways a channel and building a reinforced concrete wall type structure, with no change to surface the road surface never sank down again. Just think of that sandwich with a filling and sauce when you bite it comes out the sides. Surely we could try this out on those roads where the heavy goods cause these deep depressions on the side of the road and why you find people driving more down the middle of the road only moving back for oncoming traffic.

A friend told me 8 years ago when the roads fall apart ZA will be becoming like Zimbabwe.

Then ok.

Hey, you are spoiling his fake narrative with facts. Stop it now.
