Gary Gold has had to bite his tongue on the issue of Frans Steyn's ban, after SANZAR would not allow the Sharks coach to speak out about the proceedings.

Gold has been unable to make any comment or statement on the whole affair, for fear of once again incurring SANZAR's wrath.

Steyn, on Tuesday, was banned for five weeks for a tip tackle against the Chiefs a fortnight ago.

This came after the centre was originally found innocent by citing commissioner Jannie Lubbe following the match.

The Shark's also had to fight for the appeal hearing to be moved to Tuesday, after it was originally set to take place last Friday - a day before the Sharks played the Force in Durban.

There has been much indignation from the rugby community, who predominantly feel that the punishment was inconsistent and unfair.

Clearly, closer to home, the Sharks themselves are unhappy with the way SANZAR has gone about banning their star backline player.

Gold was asked his opinion on the debacle at a press conference on Thursday, and his lack of words spoke volumes about his feelings on the issue.

"Unfortunately, because of the... just trying to choice my words carefully here," Gold said apprehensively.

"Because of the nature of how SANZAR have 'muted us' - for use of a better word - it means that in a democratic society, I am probably not allowed to say anything, at the risk of putting my foot in it.

"So if we were unbelievably disappointed, confused, and annoyed at how the proceeding have ruined our week's preparation, and how the entire judicial system has operated - I am still unfortunately not allowed to make a comment about it."

The Sharks next face the Crusaders in Durban, and although they will be without Steyn, they have welcomed back the Springbok trio of Marcell Coetzee, Cobus Reinach and Pat Lambie.

Maybe he is guilty and should have been banned in the first place. It is just the heavy handed, god-like manner in which Saffer franchises appear to get crucified by SANZAR. It sucks!

So can we target those sanzar officials in their individual capacities?

Or like the English fans did to a certain ref, hound him online and irl till he quits...

This isn't about Steyn anymore, it's about sanzar starting to resemble fifa in behaviour.

Taking this article in regard with today… Sharks has lots to answer… ill-discipline across the board. I can only hope to see a well-mannered team playing the Lions next week.
