I just finished a diploma in financial information systems and was looking at adding a SAP FICO qualitficafion as well. Our work does not use SAP. They use an old out dated as400 based system. So any training in SAP is purely in a personal capacity. Has anybody followed a similar path. How succesful has it been. Doing SAP training/certification is a very expensive exercise

Best is to do it via company that will assist you. There are companies that specializes in SAP, like EPIUSE, and few others.

There are some free resources here:

Im going to answer you, but Im more on the technical side of the SAP world.

SAP training is stupidly expensive and its horrible to try and learn if you dont have a system/environment to practice on after the training. Ive been fairly successful with setting up my own trial environment in AWS to do some ABAP work in, but that required some basis knowledge.

As mentioned the open SAP route is a decent start, but yeah maybe try and join a company where you can grow. Open SAP couses are very basic and barely scratches the surface.

Also, if you do decide to fork out some cash for a couse, make sure its S4 Hana (Cloud) content and not the older ECC stuff.

Lastly, SAP work does not pay like it did 15 years ago, so dont do it just for the money. A certification without experience does not carry much weight IMHO.

There's still money to be made as an RPG developer for the AS/400, especially with the banks and insurance companies. If you can learn that and a high level language like java you'll have work for many years.

Appreciate the feedback. How do you get the experience without the experience. There are some nice training vids on udemy as a start, but the big issue is getting access to a live demo system.

You have received great advice already.

Begin with Open SAP to understand the strategy of SAP with S4 HANA. By 2025 there won't be a lot of support for on prem so everything going forward will be cloud based.

I would never suggest for someone to spend the money and do a certification without some internship lineup or internal changes at current company in SAP.

You can use the partner finder to see which integrators specialise in FICO (Accenture, deloitte, etc) - https://partneredge.sap.com/content/partnerfinder/search.html#/

Saying this i might be able to help, you can ping me directly. Where are you based?
