If you occasionally play strategy and first-person shooter games, this may be the card for you. It will not blow you away with its performance but will not disappoint you either. Video playback is the strongest aspect of this card.
The Sapphire Radeon HD3650 OC is not a high-end graphics card by any means and therefore not in the same league as the AMD/ATI 3870X2. It’s a graphics card that most people can afford and interestingly enough, one that will probably outsell most of the others in the same category.
The mid-market has predominantly shifted more units than the high-end market simply because of pricing. However, mid-range cards usually lack key features (when compared to highend cards) that make them unattractive to end-users. With the 3650 we in essence have the same technology that powers the high-end 3870X2 products.
The 3650 is a high-definition-ready graphics card featuring on-board audio, HDCP, dual-link DVI, the latest DirectX 10.1 support and is manufactured using the latest 55nm process. The 3650 has only a third of the calculation units of the 3870X2 and only half the bandwidth, meaning that that the card cannot deliver the kind of performance that the 3870X2 can.
However, it is worth noting that it is more than capable of playing the odd strategy game and first-person shooters such as Call of Duty 4. You won’t be able to set everything to maximum detail, but you’ll have enough visual fidelity to enjoy the title nonetheless.
Sapphire has further increased the performance of this card above what the reference card delivers, and this performance advantage makes just enough difference to make the Sapphire Radeon HD3650 OC better at gaming than the other 3650s on the market.
The 512MB of memory allows the card to support insanely high resolutions, even though this card will spend most of its time playing back high-definition content and DVDs (which it excels in). It has all the hardware video-accelerating technologies available on the high-end parts, such as VC-1, H.264, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 support, so AMD/ATI’s famed AVIVO technology works just as well on this card.
One key advantage that the 3650 OC has over others is that it is small enough to fit in many HTPC cases, runs cool and doesn’t need additional power. Therefore, even computers with 250W PSUs can make use of it.
