How to become a SAP developer in South Africa

Becoming a qualified SAP developer in South Africa can open up numerous job opportunities.

A quick search on LinkedIn for "SAP developer" will show over 100 available positions at major banks like Absa, FNB, and Nedbank and auditing firms Deloitte, EY, and PWC.

According to recruiting firm Indeed, the average monthly salary for an SAP ABAP developer was R86,301 in Johannesburg, R73,051 in Pretoria, and R53,772 in Cape Town, as of early February 2023.
Huh, I always thought SAP developers got paid way more than that. Maybe I'm think of SAP Consultants though.

I used to be a SAP ABAP dev... glad I got out. It's mind numbingly boring.

The world is changing. In the 90s they were showered with gold, in the '00 they earned stacks but it was decreasing over time. Especially because because companies are now investing in digital and not so much backoffice at the moment. I am not sure "SAP Developer" carries as much weight anymore.

Personally I haven't touched ABAP in 10 years.

Oracle > SAP

SAP couldn't compete fairly so they bribed our ANC government for contracts, shame man, had no idea things were so bad that a supposed 1st world company has to come rob the 3rd world for income..

I know a very senior SAP data migration expert, basically the heavyweights that come in to help migrate legacy systems onto SAP.

Salary is good but you can earn the same amount now as a very senior data engineer. R120k-R150k a month.
Plus as a senior data engineer you haven't locked yourself into a company where it's hard for you to ever move again.

Once you stuck so deep in SAP, it's hard to get out.

Dude move on this is like 6 years old. The article focused on Software development language... imo any development language is a good direction. SAP is the biggest ERP company in the world and will be the number 1 cloud player again very soon. SAP uses java for all their front end UI development. SAP BTP will give any developer the right to choose in which language they develop... don't see Oracle anywhere near them in terms of innovation.

Depends on level obviously ... back in the day there was no distinction between a dev and functional consultant. K3 Dev = K3 functional. With a lot of landscape changes in the last 10 years, that relationship is not one to one anymore

So many open jobs for SAP developer
Maybe nobody wants it
More a case of high demand low supply.
SAP courses are insanely expensive. In the past you needed 80% to pass.
I know they changed that in later years but still insanely expensive to get certified.

Maybe 1 of the many reason why nobody wants it
