Uniforms belonging to the South African Police Service (SAPS), including metro police, were found on Monday at a smallholding in Midrand, along with stolen firearms, 48 flatscreen television sets, DVD players and washing machines.
The hijacking of a heavy delivery truck in Midrand was reported to vehicle tracking and recovery company Altech Netstar’s emergency control centre on Monday afternoon. Ground and aircrews tracked the vehicle’s signals to the Mnandi, Centurion area, where the vehicle was recovered, but without the loaded trailer.
The truck had been transporting household appliances valued at more than R400 000.
Altech Netstar alerted the SAPS, and using the information provided by the vehicle’s Vigil Pro fleet management system, backtracked along the route the vehicle had driven after it was hijacked.
The trailer, with its load intact, was recovered on a smallholding in Glen Austin, Midrand. SAPS officers searched the premises, recovering the stolen goods, SAPS and metro police uniforms, as well as a number of motor vehicles with false registration plates, one of which had been used to carry out the hijacking. The SAPS arrested a number of suspects at the scene.
“We operate the largest private ground and air recovery service in the country, but work closely with the SAPS on occasion, especially where arrests are likely and criminal cases are opened,” says Harry Louw, MD of Altech Netstar. “In this case we advised the SAPS, and they accompanied our ground recovery crews on the trailer recovery operation. The SAPS carried out the arrests of the suspects at the scene of the bust and we are confident that they will fully investigate the circumstances around the discovery of the SAPS and metro police uniforms.”
