To be fair, as you say, remember that the French were subject to von Falkenhayn's "mincing machine" at Verdun, and I see from the Wikipedia article that there were about 163,000 DEATHS ( not casualties ) on the French side during the long battle. That is a "moerovalot".

The French manged to conjure up an audacious counter attack when Paris had been deemed lost. They split the German army and sent them reeling back. The French lost a quarter of a million men. IIRC the Paris taxis were used to move troops into the line in that battle!

Anyone watching the 90th anniversary of the end of WWI that is on the news channels right now?

First thing that struck me about the ceremonies was the apparent lack of German VIPs. I think Germany sent their ambassador or something but where's Angela? Where's the German flags? Maybe I just missed it but to me it seemed very one-sided.

Then Sarkozy makes his speech and individually mentions every single nation that fought on the Allied side including the Indians, Canadians, Yanks, Australians, Italians, Kiwis, Russians etc. etc. but fails to mention the South Africans. IIRC there were something like 150 000 South Africans that fought on the Allied side during WWI including 30 000 that fought on the Western Front where many South African regiments were completely decimated at Delville Wood during the battle of the Somme while successfully fending off the Germans. 2500 South Africans died during this battle alone.

This just shows you how biased people are even 90 years later. Thanks for nothing, Sarkozy, you idiot!

Sarkozy is the guy who told an unhappy French citizen who refused to shake his hand (political reasons) to F-off in front of TV cameras. Rude cocky bugger. Mind you, my cousin is married to a French woman and she's wonderful but Sarkozy is another animal.

To be fair. He has reached out to the Brits and Americans far more then Chirac ever did. IIRC he also sent more troops to Afghanistan.
