To be fair though they were plenty of incredibly brave resistance fighters in WW2 and they helped fight the Germans to a stand still in WW1, ultimately defeating them

To be fair, as you say, remember that the French were subject to von Falkenhayn's "mincing machine" at Verdun, and I see from the Wikipedia article that there were about 163,000 DEATHS ( not casualties ) on the French side during the long battle. That is a "moerovalot".
