Accounting firm Latita Africa says SARS' unclear and slow tax relief process for South Africans living abroad is causing confusion and frustration.

You should still register as non-resident.
That way, when the overseas company shares your income info with SARS as part of a DTA, they don't try to grab their share.

Does anyone have any current info on how to make yourself non-tax resident once you have permanent residency in another country?

Is it just as simple as ticking the "not a resident anymore" button when doing efiling? and waiting for support docs to be handed in? Or is there is more to it? For example, I have Allan Gray investments that would probably trigger CGT - I assume that would just "happen"?

I did this last year, but not completely sure about the process as my tax guy in SA did it for me and just asked me to send him a few things. Takes the hassle outta it.

One thing I needed was a certificate of resident status, which takes around 3 weeks to obtain. Get the form in the link below and post it to the IRD. They will post the certificate back to you.
