Page 1 has questions with yes and no answers.
"How many unbroken periods were you unemployed?"
"Were you unemployed for any period during this year of assessment?"

As a pensioner receiving a monthly pension does SARS consider me employed or not?
In effect, do I answer yes or no?

I think the answer is pretty straight forward. If you don't have an IRP5, you were not employed. If you select yes, there will be space on the form automatically added for you to fill out an IRP5. You don't want that!

I'm not sure how pension income is declared. Maybe call you service provider and ask them.
This is just a guess but you could declare under 'other' income. But I would get confirmation on that.

Your pension should issue you with an IRP5 so don't be shocked if there's one there..

Pensioners are not employed - unless you are employed but a pensioner - in which case your no should be a yes, unless you didn't receive an IRP5, then it would be a no :D

My pension fund submitted an IRP5 certificate to SARS. I'm a bit confused by this post. I assume the answer is "yes"

You should answer "yes" since you were technically unemployed, even though you earned an income. Ticking "yes" will still keep your IRP5 from you pension there as part of your return.

"Were you unemployed for any period during this year of assessment?"
If I say "yes" then another question pops up.
"For how many unbroken periods were you unemployed"
I enter 12 (12 months) then it states the value I enter must not be greater than 5.
So what exactly is considered a period???

But you were unemployed for 1 UNbroken period. In other words you were unemployed for the entire period

I think that would be 1 unbroken period of unemployment.

For example:
Start work 01 March
End job 30 April.
1 period of unemployment

Start new job 01 June
End job 31 July
2 periods of unemployment (add previous one)

Start job 01 Sept.
Work there until 28 feb.

In total, 2 periods of unemployment.

Thanks to the last two posts. Now my brain has clicked in. 1 it must be.

Does anyone know what exactly this changes in the end? As in, are there some apportionment or extra 'deduction' applicable to unemployed persons?

It doesn't make any difference. It does tell SARS for how much of the year you should have employment related tax certificates.

I have a question trying to submit my returns it’s asking me how many unbroken periods I have been unemployed?I stopped working last year 33 October up to date how do I answer to this question, please see attached page I am not sure how to answer to this.
