Being the good citizen that I am, I tried logging into efiling to file my returns, only to discover that I have forgotten my username and password. The cellphone I stored them on broke end of last year.

Luckily they have a system for recovering usernames and passwords. Problem solved, right? WRONG!

Coming to their security questions I am completely thrown.

Mothers maiden name. Easy enough.

Favourite radio station. That has changed. Also not sure in what format I wrote it down.

Favourite holiday destination. Might have changed. I don't know.

Favourite car brand. See above.

These are all ridiculous security questions as the answers might change over time.
Things that don't change will be much better suited to security questions. The name of my primary school. My first car brand. Stuff like that!

Now I will probably have to go in to a SARS office, stand in queues for hours, give them my id, fingerprints, and dna sample before I can reset everything.

Rant over.

I'm sure I retrieved these details over the phone - through some automated system...

Can't really remember now.

I had the same issue.

I called them, they reset it over the phone and sent me a new password via sms.
Took all of 5 minutes.

Lol, verify the number for yourself first...

Phoned the number on the efiling website. You won't fool me that easily you sneaky person!

I phoned them, inserted my tax number and id into the automated system and they sent me a new password. Problem is I still don't know what my username is!

Update:
Spoke to someone on the phone. They could give me my username.

Glad I didn't have to go to the SARS office.

LOL, Epic fail on part of OP. You are supposed to remember security questions, thats what they are there for. So SARS expect the answers you gave them and because your memory ia wonky, you rant against them?

Security questions should not depend on the phase of my life. When I was 18 my favourite car would have been "any". Now it will be something else. I don't have a favourite holiday destination. But they force me to use that specific question and therefore I had to probably choose a holiday destination that I mildly enjoyed the year before I created my efiling profile.

That is why I say they must use questions with absolute answers.

I don't even bother with remember my password. Every year I just call that IVR number and tell it to reset it and mail me the new one.

I concur. Had the same issue this morning. However I was able to remember the answers to them. Just.

I was lucky in that Chrome saved my password last year. I just went to check what it saved, out of interest's sake.

I think I'll let Lastpass manage that one for me from now on.

But you can't do that in Chrome any more? Unless I'm missing something?
