I have to admit that I am very impressed with SARS.

I did my e-filing on Saturday evening and got money refunded to me on Monday evening.

My mother's tax return was also processed within two days.

SRAS has been largely efficient for a long time. Knowing South Africans, you were probably the only tax return they had to process.

I dont remember SARS ever being inefficient. Ever since efiling Ive only heard good things about the turnaround time.

Another great South African success story! ;) :)

And to think it is a government department! I can just imagine some people cringing when they have to concede that.

Well, it took a bit longer last year so I was very impressed. Even told my Professor so I'll have to help her with her e-filing later this month.

If we're on the topic of conceding that government departments can actually do the work, I'd praise the Department of Home Affairs for getting my passport renewed so quickly (minus the fact that we now have to pay for a UK visa)

Lancelot, the Department of Finance has always been the most efficient in our government (and most other governments around the world).

The best people get deployed to Finance, because government needs to fill it coffers.

No big secret there. And it it is hardly a yardstick of how government performs in general.

'Internal collusion' suspected in diversion of R51m to counterfeit companies

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) on Friday confirmed it had been hit by a massive scam costing R51m (see article).

In an e-mailed statement SARS said: "With regards to your enquiry SARS confirms that fraud has been committed and that R51m involving two companies has been paid into a different account.

"We have been investigating the matter since January 2009 when our warning systems indentified the risk. We immediately handed the matter to the SAPS. SARS' investigations is focussing on internal collusion and we have already suspended an official as part of the investigation.

"An arrest has been made and a foreign national has appeared in court on 12 June 2009. In January when SARS detected the fraud, we immediately took corrective measures on the systems and no other associated fraud or risks have been detected.

"We must state clearly that the SARS systems are secure. It is th[r]ough our warning systems that we picked the fraud and we will pursue all that is need[ed] to deal with the matter."

VAT refunds due to these two companies were diverted to the accounts of phony duplicate companies.

According to court documents in Moneyweb's possession, the way the scam worked was as follows: Duplicates of well-known companies were set up on the CIPRO system. Bank accounts were then set up in the duplicates' names by individuals using fraudulent company and identity documents.

Members of the syndicate accessed SARS's central system. The bank account details of the legitimate companies were changed to those of the duplicates. When SARS paid out tax refunds these went to the accounts of the duplicate companies, not the real ones.

SARS has not taken this matter lying down, it has made it incredibly difficult for companies to receive VAT refunds. A special investigation unit of SARS, called the Business Intelligent Unit, has been auditing cases where the vendor is mostly in a refund position. It has also called on companies to update their banking details before paying out refunds even if the vendor's banking details have not changed.

Earlier this year they reported that revenue collection was way down... and then...

SARS collection targets could be ‘way off’
Tax target may be R60bn short

I got the same surprise. 18K refund in my account within 5 days of filling. :p I was expecting a longer process or maybe an audit.

Awesome to know that a goverment department can be sorted out, All they need to do now is sort out Home affairs

I've had major issues with SARS on 2 consecutive years with eFiling. Both times after I did my efiling they claimed I hadn't done my return and even hit me with a freakin court summons.

Luckily after the first time they called me saying I should fax them my return, I went to the SARS office as well, showed an official all my online docs and had it stamped to confirm that it was done & captured. So when I got that summons months later, I knew I was covered. I showed the prosecutor (in his office, they don't do the cases in a courtroom), and he checked his PC and said my return was captured online the first time! The case was dismissed.

So when I got another call this year asking about my 2008 return I was not impressed to have the same issue come up again. WTF?! I told them that this happened the previous year & I faxed it again. They really need to sort that out. Its a nice idea to do efiling, but only if it works without taxpayers having to still fax or go to the danged office!

I applied for a permanent passport @ dha the other day, and after a week, a I got an sms from them saying that it's ready for collection. Im still freaked out

Not to thread jack, but DHA has always been super fast for me. I think it depends where you go. When I lived there I went to the Akasia office. It also took a week for me to get a passport and other things I did there for family also went quickly. The Centurion branch is nightmarish from what I hear.

5 days for my return to be paid this time! Fastest turn around I've ever had from them.

Mine took 3 days, and today I got a thank you letter from SARS for filing early :D

All governments are efficient when it comes to taking your money :)

The problem usually comes in when they have to use said money to provided service delivery.
