SARS never fails to impress

Does SARS have a system of (for lack of a better explanation) ascribing and monitoring the "average amount expected from each taxpayer" ?

We have an SMME and pay VAT bi-monthly. If, for some reason our VAT payment is far below the expected average, they immediately pounce on us and want an audit/explanation for the drop in the amount.

Yeah, can't answer you there, but it would be interesting to know how they calculate how much you owe them or how much they owe you. I mean, I do my E-Filing, and without fail, the amount they pay me back is EXACTLY the same amount as their tax calculator 'predicts'. Would be interesting to know what algorithm or formula they use.

Spoke to a guy (IT) that worked there when they designed/implemented their current systems and from what he mentioned it seems like they have quite the beady eye and keep tabs on things.
