Hi Everyone,

Hope someone can help me out. So last year I started freelancing after being retrenched because of the pandemic.
I have never done tax returns and I also do not have resources for a tax auditor this year.

I will use TaxTim, but just have some general questions.

1. If I am freelancing. Which tax do I pay? Provisionary?
2. How do I go about paying tax

Any help or a freelancer would be nice.

Thank you. :)

It's been a decade and a half since I freelanced, and things may have changed, so take this for what it's worth.

I routinely did work for 5-6 companies, give or take. They deducated PAYE at some rate higher than what my total earnings justified, and issued an IRP5 every year. For my part, I just filled in the tax return, copied the figures off the IRP5 forms, and submitted the lot. Usually I got a tax refund.

I AM NOT A TAX CONSULTANT. This is my opinion and you should approach a tax consultant.

TAX Year is 2022

You will register for Provisional Tax. IRP6

First submission is end of August.
Second submission is end of February.

Tax is calculated on YEARLY ESTIMATED INCOME - EXPENSES for March 2021 - February 2022.

Expenses:

Keep ALL proof of transactions, slips, receipts etc. for 5 years.

1. Office space (exclusive use) to house %.
e.g. Office 10m² / House 100m²
Office = 10%

2. Rent x 10%, Electricity x 10%, Security x 10%.
e.g. Rent 3 000 x 10% = 300 expense
Electricity 5000 x 10% = 500 expense
ADT Security 400 x 10% = 40 expense

You can do the same for your Internet, Insurance etc.

3. Office Equipment and Stationery less than R7000
e.g. Paper, pen, ink, markers, printer, chair, kettle, new CPU etc.

3. Office Equipment more than R7000 you work out the Depreciation over a period of 3 - 6 years. https://www.taxtim.com/za/tax-guides/definitions/wear-and-tear
e.g. New laptop, Coffee Machine, PC

4. Software or Software Subscriptions
e.g. MS 365 Business, Camtasia, Photosshop, Windows 10 etc.

5. Medical Aid amount as specified by SARS, travel allowance (need log book), business meetings expenses etc.

6. Less Rebate specified by SARS

Calculation:

So if your yearly estimated income is R120 000. And your yearly office expense is R20 000.

Then R120 000 - R20 000 = R100 000.
R100 000 - R15 714 (Rebate) = R84 286 Taxable Income

First Provisional Tax will be R84 286 ÷ 2 = R42 143

Second Provisional Tax will be the rest of the year, minus R42 143.

So first provisional tax you would want to estimate as accurately as possible to avoid penalties when doing your second and final payment:

Other Resources:

(Some is for salaried workers, but Provisional Tax can be applied to everyone.)

So I actually resigned from my job at the end of 2019 to go freelance, and I manage to land semi-regular freelance work not long after Covid. Sadly, I cannot offer you any specific tax advice, as I paid the R500 to have a tax auditor take a look at my receipts and to file my claim for me. I was moved onto provisional tax automatically by SARS who seemed to notice that my income was fluctuating a lot, as I was previously on PAYE. My tax practitioner was going to do it for me when he said it had already been done, and that SARS has some system to do this these days.

If you're interested in my guy's info, I can DM you. The first person I reached out to wanted over R1000 for the same job.
