I got a SARS pamphlet in the letterbox the other day telling me that I would be finned severely if I didn't register for tax by November 20th?

I didn't pay taxes for 2 and half years, I've only been eligible that long, I've been unemployed for the last six months or so.

I was meaning to do the tax thing but at the time I worked long shifts till late at night, worked public holidays and weekends, not optional, my time off was spent recovering from work, I did try a few times at those SARS meeting venue things but was always unsuccessful? I tried efilling but I need a tax registration number to continue. I kinda forgot about this (I've only really been worried about getting things to eat lately.) until last week, er am I going to jail.

I tried phoning them on my cell for help but I was like 100 and something in the queue, I waited a long while before they cut me off. That was a lot of food money I just burned on the cell.

Can anyone please give me some advice?

lol I understand your frustration. I'm on the phone with them again to find out about travel allowances. The first time around I waited for an hour and when they answered the bitch hung up the phone

Are you sure it said register for tax? or did it say submit your tax by 20 Nov?
I know the cut off date for submitting is 20 Nov.

They have what it takes to takes what you have.

Go to their offices and get it sorted. Or get used to wearing orange overalls.

Go to any SARS walk-in branch. They will assist you, but yeah they're definitely going to act against those whose tax affairs aren't in order, if the ads are anything to go by

Yeah looks like phoning them isn't the answer, guess I'll just have to walk in then.... I know they're going to make me come back too.

Thanks for the help I guess.

this whole tax thing is a @#$@$@# nightmare im sorry.so fu@#$@# complicated.

my father just k@ked all over me asking me why i havent done my taxes bla bla bla.im not a criminal - i do pay Taxes... its just a nuisance registering. and no i dont wanna hold for 3 hours to get through and i cant take a days leave for this [email protected] dont own any side businesses or anything like that - Tax me once a month thats fine - no need to make this time of year a f@#$@# disaster

So you don't want some of your money back?

And how will there be a record that you've paid taxes if you're not registered as a taxpayer? Your company deducts tax from your salary and hands it over to SARS, but they don't specify that it's tax paid for matt loves telkom (that's for you to do). They effectively pay one amount by pooling everyone's tax deductions together.

Anyway for people who have questions about how the travel allowance works, I've found the link below which might help (especially if you have questions about not keeping a logbook).

More SARS bullsh*t - it doesn't let me save my return, spouting some crap about incorrect bank details. I'm 100% sure that it's correct. FFS man I don't have the time to keep taking off from work to go to their offices!

I am still trying to get off their mailing list, despite being living overseas for a few years now. Given up on them now completely. SARS owes me a credit still for 2005, and they refuse to give me the money because I no longer have an SA bank account. They also refuse to transfer it into anybody elses bank account.

Despite this all this, I still have to do tax submissions ever year with a $0 income. And they have even gone as far as fining me for late submissions, even though i no longer work in the dam country. Tried calling them too, and the wait is extremely long. Once I did manage to get through, they took all my details etc. Still waiting to hear, over a year ago now.

fo sho... its good idea to register for tax, otherwise you won't know if your company has been screwing you over with too much tax on yer paycheck. Maybe not intentional, maybe just errors, or maybe the BEE doesn't know from better :)
I just have a basic pay package, and ever since I registered a few years ago, I get some munny back every year. from few 100s to a few 1000's

The e-filing has been working well, but now this year, struggling with the wife's tax submission.... she didn't work last year, quit job to help sick auntie, so I submitted zero value return. Of course, being unemployed she did not receive IRP5 etc.
Now the e-filers keep asking for subitting supporting docs.... hellloooo! there is no friggin docs of whatever nature!
